Hello, and I am so glad I found this website! My husband and I and our three children (12, 12, 7) will be flying to Hyderabad in December. We have three weeks and are wide open. This will be our first trip to India. I would prefer a relaxed pace, and we can live without the golden triangle. I would love to work Varanasi into the trip.

We intend to do our traveling by train. We are not looking for luxury, and we don't have a luxury budget!

I would be grateful for any suggestions from anyone. Thanks,

Staci

I'd like to add that we live in Southern China where it's always hot, and so visiting somewhere chilly would be nice.

You could spend some time in Hyderabad, than move to Vishakapatnam (nice coastal city with Araku Valley and Borra caves around, quite good beaches and pleasant atmosphere... and you dont have to spend the whole day in the train moving to Orissa). From Vishakapatnam catch a train to Bhubaneshwar, and explore all Orissa has for you (Puri, Konark, Bhubaneshwar, Chilika lake). From Puri I believe there are some overnight trains to Varanasi, so you can get there without a problem.

Or you can get to Aurangabad from Hyderabad, explore Ellora and Ajantha, than choose some of Madhya Pradesh delights (there are lots of trains to main Madhya Pradesh cities from Jalgaon, which is not far from Ajantha. From Aurangabad trains list is very limited). Than you can get to Jhansi (which is not far from Orchcha, small beautiful village with great palaces and temples), and catch an overnight train to Varanasi).

If you're ready to skip Varanasi (and if your departure point is Hyderabad - I would advise it)- I would recommend you to spent whole 3 weeks in Southern India, exploring Karnataka and Tamil-Nadu.
Past the point of no return...
