One of my students asked me, "how many hours would it take to drive from the most southern point to the most northern point in India?"

Good question!

#1, which is considered the northernmost point in India?

#2, I'm assuming the southernmost point is Kanyakumari? If not, which then?

Not having a definitive answer my best guestimate was "maybe a bit over 30 hours by train...."

Any guesses, IMers? Or maybe someone knows for sure.
Caveat: If by driving, taking into account normal stops to rest, eat, etc. just like for a road trip across the US.

The southern tip of mainland India is Kanyakumari. There is a train from Kanyakumari to Jammu which takes 71 hours (way off your guesstimate).

By road I think Warshi is the northern most point that one can reach by road. Kanyakumari to Warshi is around 4000 kms and would take around 78 hours by road breaks not included.

How many hours from South to North?

I have read travelogues on Team-BHP by someone who did both North/South and East/West journeys in his car.

I don't know how hard it is to find that thread. I'll try later...

Well, that's BCM Touring, of which I am not a member, rather that T-BHP, of which I am. But You've done better than I did, and come up with an actual trip! Well done

Does it count in the time if the tracks are washed away by the monsoon and the whole bunch end up sleeping the night on the platform (I do the watch).?
