Good afternoon IndiaMike,

I was in India in 2014 for a month During June/July (Off Season). On my last trip we pretty much booked hotels when we were travelling around.

5 years Later I am returning in April for 3 weeks. I have been looking  up some of the hotels I stayed at last time "searching in advance" and I am finding the prices over double what I paid in 2014.

Do you think I might find the prices are cheaper if I want until I arrive to book instead of booking in advance? I am on a bit of a strict budget this time around.

Thanks

James

I think there would not be much difference even if book after your arrival. Costs have increased.

Which cities are you planning to visit? Which site are you looking for booking?

Inflation is there and there is also a lot more domestic tourism as well not to mention a distinct rise in affluence. Where is my 70 paise fish dinner, gone, gone, gone..

Simple solution. Check your favourite sites for prices a couple of days before arrival date then fire off an email to the hotel then compare. I do this all the time if I am staying more than 3-4 days in the one place. Higher standard hotels typically have a higher walk in price but budget hotels not so much as they welcome the business more.

I doubt there is any single answer as to where the best price can be had as such things as seasons and availability play a part.

Good luck.

Remember that some of the Indian booking sites in particular play games with discount codes, cashback offers and such that can reduce the posted rate a lot. Also, being flexible and shopping around can save a lot.

Great,

I did assume that inflation and cost of living had risen in India since my last visit,

But thanks guys! Ill shop around and see what I can work out. The beauty of India is you can always find something to match your budget!

Agoda is also a good site for substantial price cuts. The drawbacks: may not include amenities like breakfast (not my thing), may include lesser rooms (in low season you get your pick), and they may sometimes deny the reservation if they suddenly fill up at full price (complain)..
