Hi guys,

We are in a bit of a bind re-planning our first trip to India and need some help with our itinerary.
1. We would like to go from either Mcleod Ganj or Shimla to (Vadodara or Ahmenabad), Gujarat.
Ideally, it would be from McLeod Ganj to Vadodara.
We are leaving on Thursday the 24th. (Originally we were going to Darjeleeling but because of the bhunt we decided to reschedule our entire itinerary).
2. Also, what is the easiest way to get from Ahmenabad or Vadodara to Veranasi.
We are trying to minimize travel time.

thanks!! Alex

Mcloedganj-Vadodara:
Dharamsala-NH20-Pathankot-NH1A-Jalandhar-NH1-Ludhiana-Ambala-Karnal-Panipat-Delhi-NH8-Gurgaon-Behror-Jaipur-Kishangarh-NH79-Nasirabad-Bhilwara-Chittorgarh-NH76-Udaipur-NH8-Shamlaji-Himmatnagar-Ahmedabad-NE1-Vadodara.

You can refer the following log books of my trips for route details.

http://groups.google.com/group/hvkum.../himachal-2007

This has the route profile for Dharamsala-Pathankot

http://groups.google.com/group/hvkum...adakh-sep-2009

If you are coming from Shimla, you will follow the route:
Shimla-NH22-Taradevi-Solan-Panchkula (Chandigarh bypassed)-Ambala, where you will join NH1. THis route is also logged in the first link above.

It is a long drive from Vadodara to Varanasi, but there are 2 ways to get there.

First is via Central India/Indore, which means mostly bad roads with poor facilities. This is avoidable.

That would be Vadodara-

The better route would be to link up to the new East-West corridor (at Udaipur), which also means you go back North the way you came, upto Udaipur)

Vadodara-NE1-Ahmedabad-NH8-Himmatnagar-Shamlaji-Udaipur-NH76-Chittorgarh-Kota-Shivpuri-NH25-Jhansi-Bhognipur-NH2-Kanpur-Allahabad-Varanasi

I hope you have a very good reason for going to Baroda, because Dharamsala-Baroda-Varanasi is one hell of a trip.

I hope you're driving, if not, hvkumar has wasted his time, also, you've got no real hope of booking trains.

Pathankot-Baroda (23 hours) trains have very long waitlists with no chance of confirmed tickets, you could go to Pathankot a couple of days before your train and book Tatkal tickets, but the booking office opens at 08:00 and all Tatkal tickets will be gone by 08:02, so you need to be first in the queue and have every detail correct on your reservation form, and to be first in the queue, you need to be there before 07:00, maybe 06:30, and that wont be easy from Dharamsala.

Baroda-Varanasi (25-35 hours) wont be easy either, and you'll also be lucky to get confirmed berths.

Detail is vital, I've got a feeling you're about to tell us you wanted flight info.

If so, and if flights arent already booked out, try www.ixigo.com for Dharamsala-Delhi, then Delhi-Baroda, you'd also have to change at Delhi (or Mumbai) to get from Baroda to Varanasi.

thank you for your responses, i am very thankful for the information. do you know how much it may cost to rent a car with a driver (i don't know if it would be safe to rent a car in india for a few days, i'd feel safer having someone who knows the way driving us).
we will look at flights i think the one we found was too expensive around $600 each ticket.
we are going to a wedding in gujarat, the main reason for our first india trip, and we have to get there by january first. we are arriving on the 26th in delhi. we can also try to go there after january 4th, for the remaining days. we would like to see mcleod ganj/shimla.
we originally had it all planned out with darjeeling but now have to change the plane tickets or lose them, hope i can exchange them.
i would like to rent a car, i think that would be the best option, otherwise we would take public transportation buses/trains.
thanks,
-alex

Sent in quote for car rental with routes

I sent in for a quote to www.beckontours.com for car/driver. Read up on posts it seems it depends on fuel costs. i read the posts on renting a car
http://www.indiamike.com/india/buses...jahstan-t7629/
I think it would be a guess that the car/drive would cost about $$900-1000?

That's one hell of a drive, you're likely to average 50km an hour, there's a website (Maps of India I think) that has a useful tool to calculate distances and routes.

No driver is likely to know Himachal, Delhi, Gujarat, UP and all places along the route.

You really need to do anything you can to avoid that car journey.

It's likely there will be foreigh tourist quota tickets remaining (on the 26th) on one of the Rajdhani trains from Delhi to Baroda, try to book these as soon as you arrive in Delhi, also ask in the foreign tourist office (1st floor of New Delhi station, above main entrance, don't listen to anyone who tries to tell you otherwise) about trains from Baroda to Varanasi and back to Delhi.

You'll have to get an overnight bus from Dharamsala to Delhi.

thanks guys!
we decided to go to Jaipor, Udaipur instead of Shimla because of how far and difficult it was to get us back in time for the wedding on Dec 31st.
I look forward to visiting the himilayas on our next trip. Many thanks for the great travel information and roads.
