Make sure you take a trip over to Naggar when you are in Manali. Have a meal in the castle restaurant for fabulous views then walk up to the Krishna temple- (depends how good your 3 yr old is at walking and how heavy your 1 yr old is for carrying of course!)We stayed at the castle for 10 days last easter as I was attending a conference being held there. Rooms have been upgraded and a lovely place to stay if you can creat the time. Naggar is my favourite place in Northern India so I am biased.

Glad you are breaking up the journey from Manali to Delhi. We did it in one go with just 2x20 min stops when the plane was cancelled and we had to catch another in Delhi. Still feel ill thinking about it and learnt to give myself plenty of onward time in case a kullu flight is cancelled (a frequent event I now realise).

Am interested to hear any suggestions for a good place to stay on route for the future.

Have a great trip.

hey, u can directly take a flight for manali/kullu . u need to enquire for it. if theres a direct flight from mumbai to manali else via delhi option and changing the plane at delhi.
u will hav to check it out. it will save ur energy, and time.
other airports aswell.
u will hav to enquire for flights connectivity between chandigarh to mumbai /pathankot to mumbai etc.
secondly, search this forum for places in shimla etc

else,
u can choose to rest in chandigarh and also visit it. its a very beautiful city. u will lov it. u can board shatabdi express from chandigarh to delhi or any other train, else u can travel by road.

u can directly board in paschim express from chandigarh to mumbai. it will save u time and money. ur kids can sleep and rest in train along with u.
this train takes arround 28 hrs from chd to mumbai.

We had done a similar trip quite a few years back.

Looking at your itinerary, I find that you have given just 1 day for Shimla. I would give it a two. Or else I will include manikaran in my trip as follows:
For Manali 4 days will be more than enough. One day for your Rohtang Pass tour and another day for the other sightseeing in and around Manali.
If you can do away with one day from Manali, then you can visit Manikaran just off Kulu (a lovely place with a Gurdwara and a hot Spring ... the place where the Hindi movie Maachis was shot) and spend your night at Bilaspur, and then start for Delhi the next day.

Enjoy the trip ... Its a lovely place

For things to do around manali, here are some suggestions

a) For experiencing Snow : Head to Solang Valley: You will see mad rush of people to see snow and play in the snow
b) You can also head towards Rohtang Pass, it will be closed but you can drive as far as the road is blocked by snow. Chances are there will be less tourist here.
c) There is beautiful park on the Circuit house road. The road leads from mall towards the Log Huts by HPTC
d) Visit to Naggar
e) Visit to Tirthan Valley & The great himalayan national park. Go here only if you like non-touristy place. You can also stay by the river tirthan and enjoy natural beauty.

You can do Delhi Manali in a day its no more then 12 hrs drive. And if you really want a break then you can break your journey at Chandigarh and then Delhi will be 5 hrs away. In Chandigarh, visit the park made from scrap and also visit the Sukhna Lake. There are plenty of stay options in Chandigarh.

Pls keep in mind that Shimla to Manali is a long journey and will eat up your one complete day in just travelling. I hope you are comfortable with the winding roads and your kids don't have the motion sickness. Though I must confess - it is very scenic and beautiful. Though the road conditions were patchy at some places otherwise do-able (at least until earlier this year).
