Hi, I have the BIG 40 birthday in October and we are planning a 3 week trip to India (Friday 19th October – 11th November 2018) and have cobbled together part of our itinerary but would be grateful for a little help and thoughts on time spend in each destination.

Friday 19th October - Arrive in Delhi at 14:45 (we are spending a few days in Delhi to acclimatise, to see sights and enjoy the food and way of life – is this too long?)

Monday 22nd October – Overnight train (Mandore Superfast Express 12461) Delhi to Jodhpur

Thursday 25th October – Train (06.50 – Arrive 10.50) (Ranthambhore Express 12466) Jodhpur to Jaipur

Sunday 28th October – Train (07.05 – Arrive 10.35) (Jaipur Agra Fort – Shatabdi Express 12035) Jaipur to Agra

Sunday 28th October – Overnight train (19.49 – 10.30am) (Marudhar Express Via Faizabad 14854) Agra to Varanasi

Thursday 1st November – Varanasi to ?????

From Varanasi we want to head south to where it’s a little more laid back, but due to timescales will probably be better by plane – and here lies the confusion! I am planning to book the flight home either from Goa (a little more expensive) or Kochi (cheaper and better arrival times in the UK).

We wish to visit Valiyaparamba Backwaters (overnight stay – 1 or 2 nights on a houseboat), Kannur and Goa.

I have looked at overnight train back to Delhi and flying to Mangalore and train to Kasargod; flying from Varanasi to Goa; flying to Mumbai overnight stay in Mumbai and then flying to Calicut the next day. Also flying to Bangalore, Mangalore and train to Goa. I’ve looked at that many options I’m confusing myself!!

Can anyone advise please, would be much appreciated!

Take a train from Varanasi to Khajuraho and then a car to Orchha.

Hello and welcome to IndiaMike ! Is Goa really obligatory in your itinerary ?

Maybe you could fly from Varanasi to Mumbai, a direct flight; then after sightseeing in Mumbai, take a train to Varkala, which is a beach resort, followed by the rest of your Kerala itinerary. Kannur is also next to the beach. (So maybe even Varkala could be dropped.) Perhaps look at flying home from either Cochin or from Trivandrum.

After writing my post, I realized that I have just recommended a thirty hour train journey (Mumbai to Varkala) which I would not myself attempt. So, yes, a break between these two is necessary, unless you are a train buff. Or there are flights between Mumbai and Trivandrum.

How about adding on Hampi ? I might be complicating your trip for you rather than making it easier.

Edited to add:
P.S.
I am assuming that you are going to Kannur for the theyyam. Is that so ? Do read this excellent trip report :Malabar: Theyyams and beyond

Time in Delhi and Jaipur just right. Time in Agra insufficient - add a day to visit fatehpur sikri and few other attractions. Look into flying to Jodhpur as your trip is quite far in the future and tickets will be cheap (book in July for the Oct trip).
Also fly Varanasi-wherever in the south. Train journeys are great but 30 hours not worth it unless you're a train buff and not doing any other train journeys on the visit. We usually have fog delays Nov onwards but October should be just about fine.

Consider to fly from Varanasi to Cochin or Trivandrum.

For trains you have to go to Ernakulam Railway station which is around 30km away from Kochi airport. For train timings you can refer this link
