Hello
I'm a first generation Indian American going to India with my American (Read: white!) husband for the first time Oct. 16 for 3 weeks.
I have not been to India in 10 years. He has never been to India. My parents are from Andhra but our trip is really sightseeing since I have few relatives left in India.

Our hope (and i know most will caution against doing this much in three weeks but really there is little chance we'll be able to return for many many years and we want to make the most of the 3 weeks. Fruthermore, we kind of like running around big countries....)
is:
Delhi
Agra - day trip
Rajasthan (Jaipur-Udaipur-Jaisalmeer) - I was told we would have to overnight in Bikanar and Jodhur to get to Jaisalmeer
Kerala
Chennai - just to see Mallabalpuram (sp?) and then make a quick 2-night visit to see cousins in Nellore
Delhi

Couple of general questions.
1. Will it be monsoon season 2 in Kerala and Chennai in late October/early November?
2. When is Diwali this year and what's the most festive part of India to witness it?
3. Can anyone reccomend a good hotel or tour guide operator that does dessert safaris (with option of sleeping overnight) in the dessert for one night? We are willing to shell out some $ to sleep comfortably.
4. Can anyone recommend a good houseboat operator for a one night cruise in Kerala? Again, willing to spend $ for comfort.
5. What is the best section of the Kerala backwaters to do a houseboat cruise. Allepey travelling south? Or Allepey north?
6. If we want to splurge on a resort, what is the best part of Kerala for that? Allepey? Kumakurom (sp?)? Something else?
7. Any Mallabellapuram hotel recommendations?
8. If we had to decide between a Jaislameer safari and Periyer in Kerala - the Tiger Trail resort - what would you choose?
9. Has anyone been to the tree lodge in Kerala run by TourIndia? Recommended?

Thanks!

One more question - it's me again. Does anyone recommend flying between cities in Rajasthan if we have the budget? I considered this but it looks like Jet Airways at least doesn't have a tremendous # of flights between cities without backtracking through Delhi.

You should investigate Jet Airways "visit India" fares - unlimited travel for 1, 2 or 3 weeks. A good option if you want to go all over and are short on time. Jet Airways does fly direct from Jaipur to Udaipur, we did this when we were there last year and it made it really easy.
