Hello! These forums have been amazing in helping me with my plan for my first trip EVER to India. We're a couple of scientists in our mid-30s, not really party people, also not white socks and sandals tourists either. We're both well traveled and just hope to see some interesting things. We're going for 2 weeks, flying into Mumbai, taking the train to Goa, hanging out there for 5 days, taking the train to Kochi, hanging out there for 5 days. The question is, what next? We fly out of Mumbai October 21st at 11pm, and are free from noon on the 18th until then. By that time, we will have gotten our relaxing on the beach out of the way, we will have seen a good part of coastal south-western India, taken a backwater tour, etc.

I was thinking of going to Munnar to do some trekking, but it doesn't seem right to me in a way. I feel like we need to spend some time in an Indian city... but which one? Or should I stick with Munnar because it's amazing and not-to-be-missed?

Thoughts:
We could just fly back to Mumbai and stay there for the last 4 days. Elephanta island, laundry, good restaurants, beaches and clubs if we want them... But people don't seem to like Mumbai that much for a vacation, so I was kind of avoiding it.

We could fly to Jaipur and see what seems to be a more typically touristy and Asian/historical city in India with the pink city, old architecture, etc...

New Delhi?

HOW DO I DECIDE? Please help me. Any advice would be so welcome. I really need help here.

for starters, I would NOT spend FIVE days in Kochi.

Or did you mean KERALA five days?

Since you will be IN Mumbai at both ends of the trip, and you want to spend more time in a (large?) living city, i'd recommend to spend a couple days there (havent been to Mumbai, so it's just theoretical advice.

Also, what are the reasons you feel you should spend more time in a city? if you can explain that, it might with recommendations .

If you are going all the way to Jaipur, or New Delhi, might you want to consider Agra with its amazing fort, and Taj Mahal?

If you are heading East from Cochin to Munnar, you could go further East and see some of the Gtmail Nadu coast.

Personally, i LOVE the hill stations where I've been (Coonor, Ooty, Shimla, etc) but haev not yet been to Munar. I loved the lushness of the tea plantations/hills in Coonoor, which is similar to Munnar, so i've heard.

Hi there

From Munnar(which should not be missed)you could go to Kumily also known as Thekady and then across to Madurai which I hear is an amazing Sth Indian city.

The road journey from Munnar to Thekady(Kumily) is pretty special.

From Madurai you could train it to Chennai for a day or two and then Fly to Mumbai.

If you end up enjoying the India experience, go back another time and see the North.

Thanks for your replies! Sorry, I meant we'll be 5 days in the Kochi vicinity. My boyfriend has a meeting for 3 days in Kochi, so we're spending some time in Kottayam before meeting friends in Alleppey, canoeing around and heading up to their meeting at a horrendous resort thing. Any recommendations for day trips that I might do alone from Kochi would be very welcome, by the way.

I think that in my efforts to schedule everything in Munnar it seemed like every single thing around there is developed for tourists. All of the restaurants are for tourists, all of the shops are for tourists. I don't really like that feel. We're already doing a fair amount of heavy tourism and I'm hoping to see where people really live. That's my idea behind going to a city.

Here's my latest idea. What do you think? We can take a bus up to Ooty, stay overnight (at least) and then bus down into Mysore for the rest of the time. We can fly back to Mumbai from Bangalore since there are frequent trains from Mysore to Bangalore.
