Hi. My boyfriend and I are visiting India for the first time in November and would really appreciate any feedback on my planned itinerary below. In particular:
• whether you think we've missed something/somewhere you'd consider a must-visit
• if you're stayed at any of the hotels/camps
• if it's feasible to try and cram all of it in

We have a friend of a friend, who's a guide who will drive us for some of the time (and take us around Delhi), but also want to travel by train - any tips? Should we book train tickets from here before we go?

Sat 5 Nov

Sun 6-Tue 8 Nov
Stay: Apani Dhani Eco Lodge, Nawalgarh

Tue 8 – Thu 10 Nov

Sun 13-Mon 15 Nov

Stay: Pal Haveli
Do: Mehrangarh Fort
Umaid Bhawan Palace

Mon 15-Thu 17 Nov
UDAIPUR
Stay: Kankarwa Haveli
Do: City Palace

Thu 17-Sat 19
BHARATPUR & AGRA
Stay: Chandra Mahal Haveli
Do: Keoladeo National Park

Thanks in advance. Lucy

Nice

This looks great. Not too rushed at all. Question - how much was your deal at the Park? And how did you get it?
my husband and I are flying into Delhi on Sunday, Oct. 16 and will be looking for a nice but affordable hotel.

Although there is a well-timed overnight train from Delhi to Nawalgarh, I would say you're best to use the driver up till Ranthambhore (then release him to go back to Delhi).

I would guess the driver lives in Delhi, also you will want to also visit Mandawa from Nawalgarh, and to visit The Monkey temple and Amber fort from Jaipur, so the driver will be useful.

Ranthambhore - Jodhpur

From Ranthambhore you can get train 2465, this departs from Sawai Madhoppur daily at 15:00 and gets to Jodhpur at 23:00, this way you get a bit of daytime experience on a train without losing too much of the day.

Air con chair class will cost Rs 425, though this train is only busy on the Jaipur - Jodhpur section (departs Jaipur at 17:40), I would recommend you sit in the second class unreserved part of the train from Sawai Madhoppur to Jaipur then move back to Chair class at Jaipur.

Jodhpur - Udaipur

From Jodhpur get a bus to Udaipur, it will be awful, but all part of the India experience. (sorry, just not a fan of busses)(or you could get a taxi)

Udaipur - Bharatpur

Train 2964 departs Udaipur daily at 21:45 and gets to Bharatpur at 06:46

1A = Rs 1977
2A = Rs 1057
3A = Rs 691
SL = Rs 265

Agra - Delhi

Do not rely on long distance trains to get from Agra to Delhi, these can easily be 4 - 8 hours late.

The Taj Express (train 2179) departs Agra Cant daily at 18:55 and gets to Nizamuddin (Delhi) at 22:05.

The Bhopal Shatabdi (train 2001) departs Agra Cant daily at 20:43 and gets to New Delhi at 23:05.

These 2 trains are the most likely to run on time.

You should get your train tickets when you get to Delhi, you will be booking them far enough in advance to get confirmed reservations.

So the final word on it is there are no trains then? Ooff glad we got that out. Any idea what happened to them?

Udaipur to Mavli is broad gauge, Mavli to Marwar is metre gauge, Marwar to Jodhpur is broad gauge.

At one time it was all metre gauge in Rajasthan, but metre gauge is slow, has limited capacity (passenger or more importantly freight) and Indian Railways decided long ago to change all the main tracks to broad gauge.

Hi. I actually got a press deal because I work on a magazine which was £100 inc tax and breakfast. My first choice was the Master Paying Guest House (unfortunately fully booked, but did get a lovely email inviting us to come for a cup of tea and a chat) Maidens (which had been recommended by several friends but was also full). Might be worth trying both of these as you're staying on a Sunday not Saturday.

Thanks for the great info and advice. We have since changed our plans slightly to avoid doing so much travelling, so we're staying in the Chittaurgarh area instead of Jodphur to break up the journey from Ranthambhore to Udaipur. Will be returning to visit Jodphur and Jaisalmer another time.

This train is well timed.

Train 2965 departs Sawai Madhopur (Ranthambhore) daily at 23:45 and gets to Udaipur at 07:00.

2A = Rs 788
3A = Rs 518
SL = Rs 204

(just trying to confuse you)
