Hi All,

Could I please draw on your expertise. I am travelling to India next yr Feb 9th for a month. I will be in Delhi with family for a week and then heading out to SOUTH India on my OWN!! Never travelled alone and especially in India.

Could you please advise me on a number of things related to my trip to South.

Considering I have 3 to 2 and half weeks to travel in South, where would the best place be to begin? (I haven't booked my internal air ticket from Delhi to South) So where should I get my internal flight to in South? I will be departing for UK from Chennai.

Could you please help me map out a 3 week itenary, only I'm not sure how much is relistic to see in 3 weeks. I def want to see Ooty and Kerela. But I need to end in Chennai to get flight back to UK.

Along with Itenary, what would be best mode of transport to use?

Most appreciate your help.

HI Chippy,

If you have interest in backwaters, then i would say start with
kerala...places like Alleppy, Cochin, Munnar would be a treat to watch and time to treasure....

Then you can head towards Karnataka to know more on the archeological and cultural interest, where in you can see age old temples...places like hassan, belur, halebed, chikmagalur, mysore, mangalore, coorg, Mangalore, Murudeshwar, Gokarna...

And as your flight is from chennai...now u can head to Tamil Nad..A visit to Madurai Meenakshi, kodaikanal, chennai, pondichery...

Hi Hari,

Many thanks for taking the time out to answer my thread, most appreciated. In my thread above I mentioned I didn't have an rough plan of places I'd like to visit and wasn't sure where I should start. I think I have a rough idea now of the places I would like to see and that places to visit. Would welcome any comments of suggestions you may have. P.S This is a 3 week itinerary:

Bangalore
Mysore
Ooty
Kerela
Cochin
Alleppey
Maduri
Pondicherry
Mahaballpuram
Kanchipuram
Chennai

I now need to map out what mode of transport I will use and where I will stay.

Many thanks!

Karnataka
bangalore-(140km)mysore.
These places u get N number of hotels.

TamilNad:
(130km)ooty
A famous hill station, getting stay is very easy.

Kerala
(130km)wayanad-(276km)cochin-(70km)alleppy
In Wayanad i can help you. I myself is from this place.
Alleppy house boat is the main attraction, i can help you here as well.

Again TamilNad:

(270km)Madhurai.
Interest: Meenakshi temple.

(340km)Pondichery
Interest: Beach.

Mahabhalipuram
Interest: Archeological
Kanchipuram

Chennai

bangalore to mysore: You will get N buses.
Mysore to Ooty: Arrange a taxi or get priv/govern buses. (No Rail Route).
Ooty to Wayanad: Arrange a taxi or buses (rare tho). No Rail Route.

Wayanad to Cochin: bus till calicut(72km), then train/or another bus to cochin. No Need of taxi here...

Cochin to Alleppy: Taxi or bus.

In you itinerary the lengthiest route is Alleppy to madurai and Madurai to Pondicheryy. Here you can opt for rail route.

Pondicherry-kanchipuram-chennai: Hire a taxi. I do not have much idea about buses in this route.

Hope this was helpful.

Wow Hari,

This looks fantastic, . Can't thank you enough for taking the time out to write such a detailed plan. However, I'm going to throw a spanner in the works now. What do you think if I fly into the Trivandrum, meaning skipping Maduri?? I only thought this as Maduri to Chennai seems very long and also wasn't sure if apart from the one temple there not much to see in Maduri? This would mean I can start from Kerela then Coorg and Ooty, Mysore Bangalore and then finish in Chennai and see the other town near by like Pondicherry.

What you think of that?

Appreciate all suggestion and thoughts

Not bad..

You can fly in to cochin directly instead goin to TVM.
from here you can go to alleppy/kumarakom for backwaters.
Munnar and thekkady hill station.

And then come back to Cochin.

If you are planning to visit wayanad then there are two options:

cochin-coimbatore-ooty-wayanad-mysore-coorg.
cochin-wayanad-ooty-mysore-coorg.

If Wayanad is not there then:

cochin-coimbatore-ooty-mysore-coorg-bangalore.

bangalore-chennai

chennai-mahabalipuram-kanchipuram-pondichery-chennai

I hope this helps.

One small Correction. Wayanad & Coorg districts are adjacent to each other and one can directly travel between Wayanad & coorg Districts and mysore is not a Via place between these districts . It could be ooty-wayanad-Coorg-Mysore to avoid circuitous travel.

Hari, this is just an information for future visitors to this thread.

From Mananthavadi, if we take kattikulam-Tholpetty-Kutta-Gonikoppal-madikeri it is ok except around 6 kms of poorest road in karnataka end in Karnataka-Kerala border. Your suggestions and plans are extremely good. Thanks for sharing.

Hi All,

Thanks for the above, just wanted to update you that I am thinking of taking out Mysore and Bangalore, just so I have more days to properly see things and not ruch and just pass through like a tourist. These are the definite places I want to see now.

Trivandrum (see Kovalam beach and see Varkala. Hoever after reading the above threads, you are right maybe I can fly directly to Cochin. So I am flexible with either staring in TVND or Cochin. Which ever is better accessible.

Alleppey back waters cruise
I want to see Munnar and Periyar Widlife santury
Kochin
I have read Wayanad is good place to see and experience
I wanted to see Ooty and Coorg
Chennai - day trips to Pondicherry and Mamallapuram

So my dilema is:
what is the best order to see all these places?
What is better Periyar or Wayanad wildlife park? Cos I am sure there is no point of seeing both (def want to trek and have a once in lifetime experience)
If better to see Wayanad, then HOW do I get there?
Is it worth seeing Ooty and Coorg OR only see one--which is better? As I do not know the difference.

I want this trip to be relaxing but at same time I want to take part in activities- trekking, cycling, seeing beautiful sunsets and nature places- get a good flavour of locals and life of s. India.

Many thanks all and look forwards to reading your thoughts and suggestions.

now you can go like a straight line with a small twist

trivandrum-alleppy-cochin-munnar-wayanad-coorg and twist to ooty-coimbatore-chennai...

Well if you are goin to coorg then mysore is very near...

Wayanad and coorg is completely coffee plantation and lil of tea...lot of mountains and falls to walk around....!!!

it is hard to select one from thekkady and coorg/wayanad...
i do not know the possiblity for trekk in thekkady. in wayand and coorg u can defntly do that.

To reach wayanad, take a train to calicut form cochin and a bus to wayanad (kalpetta/bathery or mananthavadi).

Or a direct bus to wayanad(kalpetta/bathery or mananthavadi).
and form wayanad coorg is nearby, can hire a taxi.

In this case to reach chennai, you may want to book a train from coimbatore to chennai as you have ooty in your itinerary.

~H

again thekkady is near to munnar

Hi Hari K,

That is really helpful to know, about Munnar being so close to Thekkady. And that Wayanad is very much same as Coorg.

Will look at routes more closer.

All your advice and suggestions greatly appreciated.
