Hey IndiaMike! I've booked my first solo trip to India for 3 weeks and need some help with my itinerary. I've done some research on this sub as well as on indiamike here and also reading through the Lonely Plant guide, and this is the rough itinerary I have come up with so:
Day 1 - Arrive in Delhi and take a train to Jaipur
Day 2-5 - Spend a few days in Jaipur then train to Jodhpur
Day 5-6 - Spend a couple days in Jodphur then train to Jaisalmer
Day 6-8 - 2 day camel back desert tour, maybe a day in Jaisalmer, then train to Udaipur
Day 8-10 - Spend a couple days in Udaipur then fly to Mumbai
Day 10-13 - Explore Mumbai and surrounding area for a few days then either train or fly to Goa
Day 13-17 - Spend a few days around beaches in Goa (Panaji, Anjuna, etc)
Day 17-20 Fly back to Delhi and spend a few days there (including a day trip to Agra)
Day 20 - Depart Delhi
Does this seem feasible? I'm not sold on Mumbai/Goa - what would be some good alternatives here? Should I book trains/flights in advance given that it is high season?
Would greatly appreciate some advice! Thanks!

In general you itinerary is doable.
Just there is no train from Jaisalmer to Udaipur. You can better do Jaipur Jaislamer and then back to Jodhpur. From there are plenty busses to Udaipur.

In general it is necessary to book trains in advance. For more information see this thread., To do this you have to register on several sites, see here on the man on seat61.

An other option is buy tickets on the Foreign Tourist quota.
To find out on which trains these seats are available go to a site like erail.
Select the train, change the top box "General ' in 'Foreign'.
Go to the columns under the classes '1A' etc.
Click on 'Get' for your desired train and class. If there are FTQ tickets they will show.

Is this for January this year starting in ten days .. and the OP understands it is high season, has no previous experience in India and suddenly wonders if booking trains/flight would an advantage?

Be ready for stress .. arrive Delhi, find the correct International Tourist Bureau, hope for FTQ tickets .. be flexible .. adjust your radar.
Have fun in the muddle.

Hi Vonkla,
Mumbai is pretty cold this time.Have you done south goa ? If you havent ..then i suggest you do that. I can try and help you get a place if you havent got that sorted yet.

Michael
