we are 3 of us planning about 5 days in or around dharamshala , looking for places to visit.main interests are trekking, rafting.we're basically looking to chill at a really good location, somewhere in the wild.our priority is location irrespective of the lodging type.pls suggest.thanks.

Fastest & cheapest do not belong in the same sentence.

It will take up to 30 hours to get from Mumbai to Pathankot (for bus/slow train to Dharamsala), and about 30 hours to get back from Amritsar to Mumbai by train.

Assuming you want at least 2 days in Amritsar, you are looking at a minimum of 10 days away from Mumbai.

hehe ... fastest and cheapest ... hop on to the rajdhani from Mumbai to Delhi ... check stevens thread on Train timings .... then Take a Delhi Dharamshal bus .... from the ISBT .. 12 hours .... or take a train to Pathankot .... Trekking options are great around Dharamshala ... do expect rains but a good hiker should never get turned off by rain ... Hike to Triund - Laka got .. think that should be enough ... visit Norbulingka, Masroor ... head on to Dharamshala .. another way is to book tickets Mumbai - Delhi (Deccan Airlines) very cheap very fast (hehehe) .. or the newer spice jet .... Donate some money to a charity if you get the tickets .... spend a day at paragpur, andretta as well ... if you something more outdoors then head on to Barot or Jhatingiri ... another very good trekking option is from Bir Billing over the Rajgundha Pass to Barot ... two days ... good anging options exist in Barot on the Uhl rivber which is in Spate right now ... so thats ruled out ....

Happy Travels,

I travelled to Dharamsala / McLeodGanj last October. The cheapest way is by bus but you really don't wanna do that - you could end up killed as the roads / traffic is awful! Don't believe what you read about that flight from Dheli to Kangra - it is for VIPs and even at that Kangra airport is 'clouded in' most of the time.

The best way is to take a train to Pathankot (overnight is best) and then a taxi (tourist car) to Dharamsala.

Hope this helps!

yeah...u can have fastest and cheapest together...agree on the goverment buses have also "deluxe", two by two seats, and super deluxe buses which really I dont know what is!The thing is that the deluxe service to delhi is cheaper than the deluxe private buses that u can get...we paid a week ago almost 500Rs for two of us!Now about the trip...u know probably how it is, especially now with all the rains up there we were glad that the bus arrived in Delhi...even after 16 hours....
