Hello ,

Never having been to India and having read some of the wonderful suggestions and posts on this site I have decided to post our plans and hope to get LOTS of suggestions.

We are planning to travel as follows: Mid-march 2010

DAY 1 morning, arrive Delhi, travel to Vrindavan. Spend night.
DAY 2 half day in Vrindavan, travel to Agra. Spend night.
DAY 3 half day in Agra, travel to Jaipur. Spend night.
DAY 4 half day in Jaipur, travel to Delhi. Spend night.
DAY 5 dawn, travel to Amritsar via Express Train. Spend night.
DAY 6 all day, Amritsar. Spend night.
DAY 7 half day, travel to Delhi via Express Train. Spend night.
DAY 8 mid day, flight to Goa. Spend night.
DAY 9 all day, Goa area. Spend night.
DAY 10 all day, Goa area. Spend night.
DAY 11 all day, Goa area. Spend night.
DAY 12 all day, Goa area. Spend night.
DAY 13 all day, Goa area. Spend night.
DAY 14 mid day, flight to Delhi. Flight home.

This is what I have come up with.

1. The locations to visit IN and IN-between these destinations are what I am interested in knowing? Also will I have enough time to see the best sites in those destinations?

2. How much to rent a NICE five person van, comfortable w/ our gear (something like Toyota Commuter) and driver for first 4 days?

3. Should I drive to Amritsar from Jaipur or return to Delhi and take the Express Train?

4. Would it be worth while to visit Pune while in Goa? How to get there/how much $/how long to travel?

5. And most importantly, WHERE TO STAY? I would like to stay in the Mid-to-Upper range of facilities. I am not on a shoestring budget and want to be comfortable and well located. I have travelled central america staying in Hostels and wouldn't trade that for the world, but this is a family trip and we want to find some good deals on some great hotels. Ambiance, service, and style are all factors, it doesn't have to be brand new and super western, no Ritz or even Marriott types needed, just clean with good service and location.

Well thats about it, (alot, I know ) but I am in the dark on this one, so please help if you can!!

Thanks,

Stoke

Big Stoke...

Haven't you included any sight seeing in Delhi? Very surprising if it's not included.Delhi has many World Heritage places and shouldn't be missed for anyone coming to India.

Rock, we are committed to seeing these cities that I have listed already. We will visit some of the Delhi sights when there, but no we didnt actually dedicate one whole day to Delhi, although we will be in and out a bunch so we will make it to some spots.

What did u have in mind?

Well your tight plan shows that you have not selected any day for sight seeing in Delhi and it's more as a transit city only.So thats why I asked if you had some plan for Delhi. To see Delhi you would need at least 1-2 days.In half a day you might not see much. But since you would be coming-going Delhi you have the chance of covering few places in Delhi. If you wish you can take one day from Goa and add it to Delhi but again depends on your choice.

For renting a vehicle for 5 persons you can get a Innova/Qualis/Safari/Tavera/Scorpio etc.The rent depends on the vendor as they can charge foreigners more.Normally you can hire these vehicles for about Rs9-11/km.Also in Delhi you can hire these vehicle for about Rs1000/1200 at least for 80 kms in day and about Rs9-11 per extra km.Also include other costs like Toll Tax etc if crossing states.

For STAYING there are lot of mid-range hotels. The rent ranges from Rs1000-3000/day.Try Ginger hotels as people use it.

Hi Stoke,

I'm surprised more IM'ers couldn't help you although weekends it can be kind of slow here.

I can only remember ever seeing 3 restaurants in Vrindavan (1 Chinese/South Indian, 1 McDonalds type of place and a large hotel with a restaurant on the ground floor). If you ask a driver to take you to the South Indian restaurant then you'll be in the area where the other two are also located.

I'm a disaster with addresses and names & deserve to be shot

Best thing about Vrindavan is wandering through the alleys and going down to the river at night... some people warned me not to go near the river at nights but they seemed kind of nerdy. There are some beautiful temples too but I dont have the address (I dont even think Vrindavan has street names).

Anyway, check out my blog as I write about Vrindavan / Amritsar / Agra there but be warned my writing is only for the very bored, haha.

Good luck on your travels Stoke, India is beautiful (and very crazy).
