Hello all-

I've managed to book trains from Chakki Bank to Haridwar and Haridwar to Varanasi, but the Delhi-Pathankot (Chakki Bank) trains are pretty much all book. As I want to be out of Delhi on April 29 (I land the previous evening), I'm wondering about the following options:

1. Bus- The obvious alternative to get directly to Dharmsala from Delhi since the trains are booked. As I understand it from here, they leave in the 6 PM window everyday? Is advanced booking recommended? Is it worth trying to get a bus with those reclining beds or just the reclining chairs?

2. Fly to Amritsar (relatively inexpensive, and very short flight), spend the evening at the Golden Temple, then move on to Dharmsala on April 30? My train leaves Chakki Bank on May 6 for an over night to Haridwar and I was hoping to spend a few days in McLeod Ganj and on up to Triund. Will this give me enough time in and around Dharmsala to just see some sights and do a little exploring (no major trekking, etc.)? I had wanted to see The Golden Temple on my last pass through India, but missed it and the prospect of a 12+ hour bus ride not even a day after flying from the US sounds terrible. Though, I suppose, getting to and from Delhi airport in as much time sounds unappealing too.

Thoughts, suggestions--all apreciated.

Thanks.

Go for it. Go to Harminder Sahib and then eat a langar. At the least do not forget to have a amritsari paratha (not at the langar, but in a local dhabha)

Thanks for the input. So, to get from Amritsar to Dharmsala, as I understand it, involves either one or two buses. The trains are all booked to get from Amritsar to Pathankot. Are there sites where seats on buses between Amritsar and Dharmsala can be reserved? Or are we talking non-AC buses the whole way? I've not used the buses in India at all. I know HPTDC buses can be reserved online from Delhi direct to Dharmsala, but I'm not seeing that for Amritsar to Delhi.

Suggestions on where I can find time-tables, etc. would be great for Amritsar to Dharmsala.

Thanks.

Thanks for the offer, Chahal. Once I nail down the first few days, here, I'll let you know.

Is that 12:30 PM HRTC (Amritsar to Dharamsala) bus that I see in the HRTC timetable able to be booked in advance? I registered for a password, etc. with the HRTC website, and it seems that advance booking is only available for buses that leave from HP locations and arrive elsewhere.

If that is, indeed, the case, how early/when should I get my bus ticket and/or get to the bus station? I'm worried that since all of the trains are booked full that the buses will be packed as well.

Thanks.

Amritsar to Dharmshala via Pathankot is less then 200kms and I would imagine hiring a small taxi would cost you less then Rs2300-2500 for the drop off or may be a couple of hundred more if the taxi guy moans about hilly roads. You didint say how many are travelling, if there are 3-4 of you then it works out pretty cheap I would say.

It will most likely just be myself, so one, unless I encounter other travelers doing the same, then can maybe arrange for the cab share. On a link someone provided in one of these forms, the car service that the link led to seemed only to do return trips from amritsar to Dharamsala. Would invest the money if they are wiling to do just one way. Guess I have to explore this option some more.

@ Harryxs--by option two, you mean the one way car service to Dharmsala, yes?

If so does anyone know of companies that will do this in Amritsar? Or will anyone be traveling from Amritsar to Dharmsala on April 30 and want to share the car?

Many thanks.
