Team!

What would be the most logical route to travel Delhi to Delhi passing through Rishikesh, Shimla and Manali.

A few consideraitions:

* I would land at Delhi around c11am. And would want to head straight off elsewhere.
* I want to take the Kalka - Shimla toy train to Shimla

From my own knowledge I am thinking the following:

Land Delhi - Train 12055 at 15:20 to Haridwar

Train 12237 at 6.27am arriving Kalka at 10.05am (for the 12.10 Himalyan Queen to Shimla)

Shimla to Manali by private taxi

Manali to Delhi - Night bus

Any suggestions on if there's a more logical way to do it? And if there are better modes of transport between each place?

When are you planning the train journeys for - if in the winter seasons or more specifically fog affected times - note that the trains in north India would most probably not follow schedule. So you may want to have more leeway than just 2 hours and you may want to look at alternative modes of transport as well as a back up.
As for Manali to Shimla, there are a couple of direct buses (government) as well - but they are day buses, will take up the entire day but the route is not bad.

Thanks Snotty - planning for early April - first two weeks.

The other option is to swap out Manali for Amritsar (the trip is for my mum and her first trip to India - so variety is good!).

Revised version would be:

Delhi - Amritsar
Amritsar - Shimla (via Kalka)
Shimla to Rishikesh/Haridwar
Haridwar to Delhi

The second option is probably easier to plan and gives a nice blend of spiritual/city/mountains.

Thanks,

Hmm. Only thing that you will travel twice the distance to reach Amritsar as against Haridwar. And it would be hot everywhere, more so in Amritsar compared to the rest of the places that you thought of.
If you include Chandigarh as a break for Amritsar, then it makes it similar.
How many days you have at hand would probably dictate that.

Not sure I follow - are you saying Amritsar-Shimla-Rishikesh is more to travel than Rishikesh-Shimla-Manali?

Yes will be hot, but hopefully not too bad in Amritsar - I presume Shimla and Rishikesh will be fine.

Alternatively we could do Shimla, Manali, McLeodGanj - better weather wise but feels like too much travelling.

Flexible on days, but somewhere between 8-10 nights (not including Delhi).

As much as I love Manali, not sure it's somewhere i'd take my mother.

How about Amritsar-McLeod-Rewalsar-Shimla-Delhi if you only have 8-10 days anymore travel would be too much.

Or Amritsar-McLeod-Shimla-Rishikesh-Delhi

Thanks KK - and yes, maybe Manali isn't the best idea, but the whole trip can't be about her!

But yes, I think she'd enjoy McLeod Ganj, I certainly did. Lots to think about!

Team,

The flights are booked and a slight change of plan, we are now spending a full 17 nights in the North, arriving 4th April.

In conjunction with BBís offline help and showing MANY pictures and YouTube clips to my mum
Iíve devised the below plan:

Fly to Amritsar - 2 nights
McLeod Ganj - 3 nights
Manali - 3 nights
Shimla - 2 nights
Jim Corbett Safari - 3 nights
Rishikesh - 2 nights
Delhi - 2 nights

Between a combo of flights, trains and taxis Iím largely there in terms of travel.

I do have one issue however, how do
I get to Kalka for the Toy Train in time from Manali? Or could I re-jig the order of places?

Alternatively, we could get the toy train down, are the views/experience any different going down as appear to up to Shimla?

Itís number one on motherís list so need to include it somehow!

Delhi, Rishikesh, Manali, Shimla

Drive from Manai to Chandigarh the day before and next morning you can drive to Kalka. It would mean spending a night in Chandigarh.

Going up to Simla is nicer.

Second the going up part as the scenery improves as you climb.
Coming down is what we did - was good, but going up is better.
Do remember, if it is messing up the trip - going down is pretty good too.

Thanks both. I need to include it so will factor a night in Chandigarh (I presume no point staying in Kalka itself?).

As an aside which would make more sense?

A) Amritsar, Chandigarh, Shimla, McLeod Ganj, Manali

B) Amritsar, McLeod Ganj, Manali, Chandigarh, Shimla

Iím both instances next stop will be Rishikesh.

Delhi, Rishikesh, Manali, Shimla

Both options entails long travel times.
Option B flows better so go with this one.

Thanks GP.

If I was to drop one and add in Nainital later (as going to Jim Corbett) - would that help from a travel time perspective?

Maybe Amritsar, McLeod, ChandiG, Shimla, Rishikesh, Jim Corbett, Nainital.

Not sure if any better?

Don't want to be awkward, but from a time perspective it would be better to do it the other way around if going to Nainital, this way you could skip staying in Ch'garh & still take toy train up hill.

So consider Nainital-Corbett-Rishikesh-Shimla (via Ch'garh or Ambala)-McLeod-Amritsar.

Thanks KK - and not being awkward at all, appreciate the input.

Question though. (Iím probably being stupid) but how can I still get the toy train this way around? Are you suggesting get a taxi on the morning from Rishikesh directly to Kalka?
