Hi,
I'm planning a trip from Delhi to Kolkata between mid-july to mid-august. It will be my firts time in India. I already traveled at the end of the rainy season in west Africa and it was fine, but I dont' know how hard the monsoon season can be in that part of India. Could you give me some information about that? I read that Rajasthan and the northern/mountain regions should be the best place to go in that period of the year but I have the idea that Delhi-Kolkata could be a very good way to enjoy the spirit of India for the first time. Maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, any suggestion is very welcome. Thank you very much.

For a sample of India in the monsoons that doesnt include Rajasthan or the hills, have a look at this blog by fellow Indiamiker Ocean Tragic - http://monsoon-meandering.winchcombe.org/.

They did Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Hampi, Hyderabad, Amritsar and lots of small places in MP by train.

thank you very much, even if it's not the same journey... I'm afraid that in the north-east the weather can be pretty different...
