Looking for a place (or a few places) where I can relax and hang out on my laptop for a few weeks.

Never been to India during the rainy season so not sure what to expect... mostly my aims are keeping budget down (so not Goa) and finding somewhere reasonably clean.

If I can spend less than 3-4/night on a private room, I'm happy.

You need to spend at least 400 / 500 INR for a room .

Then maybe Goa is not for me. Last time I was in India I paid more along the lines of 200-300 INR.

When was the last time? Your other cost expectations will also have to be revised accordingly.

With a budget of 300 per night, you probably can find something in the hills if you rent for a two week block at a stretch. Try villages off Mcleodganj / Manali - it does rain a lot there though and there are landslides but you also need wifi therefore you probably cant go too rural.

For example I spent 250 INR/night for a room in the old town/tourist part of Varanasi in October 2016.

I will look at the Mcleodganj/Manali area, but yeah as you say I need Wifi, and I'd also prefer areas that can be reached with standard transportation (bus/rail) instead of hiring taxis.

Somehow your mention of Goa in the first post gave me the impression that you're looking for a trendy place, sort of a flashpacking trip.

Well, If you're OK with a place that's neither terribly scenic nor has great weather and the place is a room in a home, try looking for a PG in one of the lower cost cities - typically these are in east - Gorakhpur, Kolkata, Patna all come to mind. You may actually find something that goes by the month and then request the owner for two weeks' stay. Use 99acres, nestaway, magicbricks or similar site.

PG?

Ironically arupratan ghosh is more or less right about Kolkata -- I had a very tough time finding anything under the 400/500 INR mark there.

And no, I'm definitely not a flashpacker. (do flashpackers go anywhere in India outside Goa?) But I was hoping to find somewhere outside the usual grunge of India's larger cities. While Varanasi was fantastic for what it was, I like things a little cleaner if I'll be there a while.

Thanks for mentioning those sites, I will take a look.

Paying guest.

Clean places are either available in smaller, village like settings (many villages in TN are very clean as are places in north east - but may not get reliable wifi), along the coast (kerala is good, but expensive), or up the hills (ladakh, Spiti) or in upmarket cities. Cities in UP are typically not very clean.

Yeah, I keep looking for the fabled days of old. However, my spouse says I am either insufferably cheap or its early sign of dementia..

But internet is extremely poor and unreliable in Ladakh, and I'm pretty sure it's even worse in Spiti!
