I am obviously not very good with modern technology. I have spent awful lot of time trying to book my trains on Indian railway website without success.
I am arriving in India on 3rd oct. Hoping to take shatabdi express from new delhi station to agra and back on the same day on 5th oct. Then the next day I hope to go to Amritsar on shatabdi.
Are the Indian railway bureau people at the airport helpful in booking these trains for us? Is it possible to book these trains on arrival at the airport? Or can someone tell me any easier way to book these trains please? HELP.

I cheated for all my train bookings last time - I booked through travel agents (one in Amritsar) and they did all the bookings for me - for a few hundred rupees extra. Did it all on email. No credit card asked for. I was hiring cars from these guys so it was kind of an extra to their service. Agents met us with the car and we paid for everything at the end of the car hire.

this is one of the outfits we used..

If you booked hotels through websites, why cant you book trains through the website ?

Steps :

Here is the link : http://irctc.co.in/

1.Create an id, then simply book the tickets. No issues at all.

2. Fill these in Plan my Travel :

From : NDLS (New Delhi)
To : AGC (Agra Cantt)
Class : First Class AC(1A) or AC Chair Car(CC)
Ticket Type : E- Ticket

3.Click on Find Trains
4. Of the List, choose, train No. 2002 ..
5. Click Book ticket
6.Fill in all the details.
7. Pay by credit card.
8. Get the confirmation
9. Print the ticket and keep it with you. Also have one photo id of yours, while you board the train.

Do the same for the return journey.

Any problems let me know. Dont let touts fleece you ..

Few things to keep in mind

Tickets could be booked from 05:30 IST to 23:00 IST only.

Check www.erail.in to see what classes are available for the desired train. For example Jan Shatabdi trains only have Chair Car tickets, so if you select 1A, 2A, 3A or SL class you would not find Jan Shatabdi trains.

they were fairly Amritsar specific - I'd try kalka travels for New Delhi tourdelhi@yahoo.com - they weren't bad they booked hotels and trains for us as well as looking after us on a two week Rajasthan tour. The hotels they booked for us were fine - nothing special - a little overpriced.... but there a literally hundreds of travel agents on the internet that should help for New Delhi.

Time of day for bookings seems important - target late evening India time.

Thank you for this step by step guide. I tried very hard this website comes up with all sorts of bookings you can make from here for travel by air/hotels /english /spanish trains ec. etc. So it was not simple as your guide made it out to be. But by chance and I really don't know how I managed to register myself but by then it was too late to book. I have been working late again today so can't book as it won't let me.
I will try again tomorrow I hope. The difficulty with Indian railway website is that it asks you about train no./train index/stationindex etc etc. I just loose patience and give up as there are hundreads of train numbers and station indexes how would you know which train no. you want?
I will try to get my daughter's help I think over the w/e and if I fail again I hope you won't mind answering a confused woman's questions a little further.
Thank you

I also struggled initially. I booked all my train travel only using the IRCTC website. I registered, then I made sure to book my trains only during the hours a previous writer here listed. It got really tricky for me when I tried to pay. You have to choose a bank gateway through which to pay and it doesn't matter much which one your choose. I chose Axis from the first section of choices offered. I had to call my credit card company to tell (Citi Bank Mastercard) them I was trying to book tickets b/c they were blocking my purchase b/c they thought it was fraudulent. Once they put it in the system that it was legit, I was able to easily purchase my tickets through Axis as a gateway. Good luck and hang in there! Once you do one, it's really easy.

I am sure it is me and me alone but I find this website even more complicated. I entered the New Delhi to Agra cantt. and it came up with hundreads of trains and numbers which meant nothing to me. I might really have to us an agent.

Does anyone know if the Indian rail bureau at the airport are helpful in arranging travel within 2 days of arriving in India? Or will the trains be so booked up that I would have no chance of traveling by train to Agra on 5th and to Amritsar from Agra overnight.

Tywocky. Sorry to be so clueless

Thank you Janine I will try again tomorrow now as it will be after 11.00 pm in India and they only work until 11.00pm I read somewhere. Mind you I don't think I will get a chance tomorrow or Friday as I am working late both days . Do you know whether they work at w/e?

Initially the boooking site may appear confusing - once you have booked a couple of times, booking a ticket will then ony take you a few minutes. As someone has said, detailed instructions can be found if you use the IM search function.

I would also suggest playing around the booking site to see how to find the right train, and to book (seperate processes and maybe seperate URLs).

As far as I know, there is no rail office at the airport. There is a foreigners' rail booking office at New Delhi rail station. So if you want to make reservations for the day you arrive, you'd best figure out how to do this online.

I found booking tickets was simplest using cleartrip.com. They have a straightforward search and booking engine. No problem accepting and processing my UK credit card with just the normal online verification process.
