Sothern travel sojourn!!!

Thanks Folks! I was going through the thread and is very useful. In fact, am planning a similar family trip too in the 1st week of Jun'11. Haven't done the tix/ bookings yet and will include two kids one of 6 & other of 2.

I'm in B'lore and intend to do a road trip (Innova). B'lore - Ooty (via Bandipur Park) & Conoor - Kodaikanal - Madurai - Rameshwaram - Kanyakumari - B'lore

Pl help me understand if my plan is good and what are the sight seeings that I should consider as part of this plan:

SAT - Early morning (6AM) dep from B'lore. Arrive in Ooty late afternoon with stop over Bandipur. (We have visited Mysore earlier).

SUN - Ooty & Conoor Sightseeing & late night arrival in Kodai

Mon - Kodai (sight seeing)

Tue - Kodai to Madurai for temple visits. Stay overnight in Madurai.

Wed - Madurai to rameshwaram (leave afternoon) for early evening arrival.

Thu - Perform Pujas and leave for Knayakumari later afternoon for late evening arrival

Fri - Kanyakumari include sunset. Later in gthe evening for departure to B'lore.

Sat - Arrive B'lore (expect one night on the way to be spent).

Pl let me know:
a. If the Itinerary looks good & not too much for days?
b. what sight seeings to be done at different cities
c. Hotels to stay & food (we are veg)?
d. Understand roads are good?
e. Clothing needs?
f. Any other things to kept in mind.

Thanks

Mysore:

The Mysore zoo is worth a visit. It provides an excellent three to five kilometer walk, very well guided by the signs in situ. The Palace is worth a miss. It's a gaudy Raj era bauble built circa 1912. The best way to visit Chamundi, whether you are a devotee or a secular tourist is to climb the hill up the 1001 steps. There are several temples enroute up the stairway. The path is patrolled by uniformed Mysore Police, and is electrically lighted after dark. Climbing recommended only for the physically fit.

Avoid the Parklane Hotel, both for accommodation and eating. The live entertainment when I dined was one man playing a Western violin. The tune seemed familiar: Brahms? Berlioz? No -- the man was playing, note for note, children’s calliope music. A horde of oblivious Western tourists, only a few among them suitably jaded, and dozens of very spivvy looking local arrivistes downing booze and plowing through mediocre and overpriced food.

The "famous" Dasaprakash is fine, if you know exactly what you're getting into. Think Woodlands at Mylapore in terms of concept, but dingy throughout and no pool. I would say visit in person before booking. It certainly had a deserted feel when I dropped by.

The RRR restaurant in the main square is a treasure of India. Jam packed to bursting at mid day, meals fabulous, prices cheap.

As a community, Mysore is among the most laid back and tourist friendly cities I've visited in India. It's a very walkable city as well if you like a good ramble.

Now my main concern is about the weather.
I have 2 years old of child with me. What will be the temparature of Ooty and Kodaikanal? Based on that I will take that much amount of Woolen clothes.

At Kanyakumari you might like to book into the Vivekananda Ashram for your visit. Excellent accommodation is on offer there set in more than a hundred acres of cultivated garden land.

As you would be at Kanyakumari for the day, you would likely move towards the southern tip where you can take a ferry boat to the memorial island, and enter the OM cave. Back at the tip, the Devi Kumari temple attracts Hindu devotees. There is a Gandhi Memorial nearby, marking the spot where Gandhi's ashes were kept prior to being scattered into the ocean nearby. Many visitors take a dip into the ocean just off of the point.

You really can't do better than the Vivekananda Asharm. Booking ahead is essential.

Mysore Ooty

Hi

I am also from Kolkata and planning to travel to Mysore-Ooty - I am planning to take flight to Bangalore and travel by car.

What are the good hotels in Mysroe and Ooty and tentative car rental charges from Bangalore -Mysore-Ooty.

Thanks

Ananda

1) At the minimal cut short Kodaikanal as almost ooty and kodaikanal are almost look alike (in weather, greenery, view points)

2) Kodaikanal to Rameswaram by car might be bit too costly. Try to get upto madurai from kodaikanal by bus (Buses are frequent) and from madurai board a passenger train until rameswaram

3) Try to spend one more day in mysore or cutshort 30% of places in mysore to experience and enjoy !

4) Also last week of april & May are the MOST CROWDED season in both ooty and kodaikanal during which accomodation costs become 1.5 times and also expect mad rush at all tourist spots. Please be prepared.
Hope this helps. If you need more info, please post.

Travel Review:

Day 01: Duronto exp Depart @11:00 A.M from Howrah & arrived @Yesvantpur, Bangalore @16:30 P.M. next day.

Day 02: Arrival Bangalore - Mysore (140km)
From Yesvantpur Jn we catched auto for Rs. 100 and reached Bangalore city Jn / Majestic Bus stand. From there we took A/C Volvo bus (Airavat) of The KSRTC (Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation) and Transfer to Mysore Bus Stand. It costs Rs. 250 each and tooks 3-3.5 hours. Took prepaid auto from there and reach the Hotel Mayura Hoysala hotel of KSTDC for Rs.20 auto fare. Night stay @Mysore. Hotel tariff is 1500 per night (A/c Deluxe room).

Day 03: Mysore
From this day our original tours begins and it was a special day for us as that day was our marriage anniversary day.
Get a cab with the help of hotel. Started around 8:30 AM after hotel’s complimentary breakfast and visited the places in the following order: Chamundi Hills and temple, Nandi Bull Statue, Mysore Palace, bought some Mysore silks from Karnataka Silk emporium, then took a special lunch in a good hotel , St. Philomena's Church , Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, the spectacular island fortress of Srirangapatnam, Tippu’s Summer Palace/Daria Daulat, Gol Gumbaaz, Sangama (Confluence of three rivers), Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple and at last reached Brindavan Gardens around 5:30 PM. Watched Illuminated Brindavan Gardens and Krishnarajasagar Dam in the evening along with the musical light show. Return back to same hotel by 8:30PM and night stay @Mysore. That was little bit a hectic tour. It can be divided into 2 days tour and can include other places which I missed. As per my opinion best places are Chamundi Temple and Nandi Bull Statue, Mysore Palace, Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary (nice experience) and Brindavan Gardens.
For whole day the cab took around 1500 (including the parking charges). Anyone can avail any local bus tour with lesser costs.

Day 04: Mysore - Ooty
We didn’t able to arrange car to visit Bandipur Wild Life Sancturary (We all got disheartened due to this).
Early morning after breakfast, we proceed to Ooty enroute visit Bandipur Wild Life Sanctuary (saw some deers, elephants and sambars along/ very near to the bus route), Mudumalai National park in a local tour operator’s bus (small Swaraj Mazda bus with minimal cost of Rs. 200 each) arranged by our same hotel. Enroute to Ooty we visited Ooty Lake (nice place) and had a boating in the lake.
Note: For boating in the Ooty Lake if you are enough able to do paddle boating you can easily avail it with minimum cost but if you wish to avail a boat (10/8 seated) which operates by others then that will cost Rs. 500. We could manage to form a group of 10 from our same bus and avail 10 seated boat with minimum cost.
Arrived at Ooty TTDC Hotel@ Charing Cross Road (by 4 PM) and check-in at the hotel. Tarrif Rs 1500 (including Service tax).In the evening around 5 PM took local auto (Rs. 30 – 50 based on bargaining) visited the Botanical Garden (next best place of Ooty) and did some shopping there. Night halt @Ooty hotel.

Day 05: Ooty - Coonoor
In the morning took a cab with the help of Ooty hotel and proceed towards Coonoor (20 KM from Ooty) to look from close quarter the Tea Gardens, Sim’s Park, Dolphin’s Nose, Sleeping Lady Montain View, Lamb’s Rock and enjoy a tour of the 'Queen of the Blue Mountains', that includes a visit to Dodabetta Peak, tea factory and bought some tea packet (not as par the expectation) and proceed to Ooty station by 1:00 PM. The cab took Rs 1100.
Took the toy train from UAM (Ooty) to MTP at 2 PM. Reach MTP@6 PM. Transfer to Coimbatore by local Bus.Overnight stay @CoimbatoreTTDC hotel. Tarrif Rs 1000 (including service tax).

Day 06: Coimbatore - Kodaikanal
In the morning took cab around 8:30 A.M. and the picturesque journey continues through the Palani hills (Palani Temple on the way) to another scenic hill-station. On the way visited Silver Cascade Falls. On arrival, checked into the TTDC Kodaikanal hotel (best hotel in our tour) around 1 PM. Tarrif Rs.1500. Cab took Rs 2600. Alternatively you can avail a bus from Coimbatore to Palani and again a bus from Palani to Kodaikanal (not availed to avoid hectic journey with my huge luggages and small kid).
In the evening(started around 4PM after taking lunch and mini rest) visited the Kodaikanal Lake, Coaker’s Walk, Golf Links, Green Valley View, Pillar Rocks, Pambar falls (Lirill Ad shooting point), Upper Lake View, Guna Cave/Devil’s Kitchen, Pine Tree forest, Silent Valley View1, Bryant Park, 500 Years Old Tree, etc. We hired a local cab which took Rs.700.
Best are Coaker’s Walk, Pillar Rocks, Pine tree forest and bought some home made chocolates and Eucalyptus oil from a local shop. Our luck’s favors as we didn’t get much clouds during our visit otherwise clouds might cover the viewing scene from these spots and it is ultimately your loss.
Night Stay @Kodaikanal Hotel.

Day 07: Kodaikanal
After taking breakfast from the hotel (complementary) we started our journey around 10 AM. First went to Forest office to collect the pass to enter Berijam Lake area. It will cost Rs100. Be ensure you have any photo identity with you. Then proceeds towards beautiful journey of Berijam Lake area. Visited Silent Valley View2, Caps fly view, Fire Watching Tower, Upper view of Barry jam lake, and ultimately at nice Berijam Lake. Then in the afternoon proceeds to poomparai village (Fully surrounded by mountains). Enroute we visited nice pine trees with small falls, Bisons in the surrounding jungle, Laxmi temple and then we entered the Poomparai Village watched carrot plantation facilities and Kurinji Andavar temple in this village(good one but not exceeds our expectation). We took lunch in a road side top hill hotel on the way to Poomparai village (nice experience). In the evening we (only me and driver as it is raining at that time and I didn’t take risk to take my little son and wife for trekking) watched and trekked Bear Shola Falls, Vattakkanal Falls, Difference rock, etc. This whole day cab tour costs me Rs. 2500. It was a hectic tour to cover all the places in 3/4th of a day but we enjoyed it very much.
I suggest to take your time and spend 2-3 days at Kodaikanal (my best place of the whole tour). Take hotel conducted bus tour each day to visit one set of places with minimal cost.
In the evening proceed to Madurai by cab, cost Rs. 1500 and overnight stay @Madurai, TTDC hotel near Madurai railway station. Tarrif Rs. 1500 (A/c Delux)

Day 08: Madurai and Rameshwaram.
In the early morning @8:30 AM took cab for Rs. 2500 and first visited Madurai Meenakshi Temple (nice temple) and then proceeds towards Rameshwaram. Saw the Rameshwaram Rail Bridge which is on the sea. We are lucky enough as that time a train was crossing the bridge. Visited the Rameshwaram main temple. Again we are lucky to reach there before 1 PM as the temple closes after 1 PM and re-opens after 4PM. Also visited some local places like Kothandaramar Temple, Ram & Laxman kunda, etc. Return back to Madurai and on the way visited Madurai Mariamman Teppakulam temple, Madurai Palace and overnight stayed@ Madurai.

Day 9: Catched train: VAIGAI Express (12636) from Madurai@6:30 AM and reach Tambaram station@ 3:00 PM (1 hour delay). Took auto (for Rs. 100 depends on bargaining) and reached Chennai Airport.
Catched flight INDIGO from CHENNAI (7:40 PM) and reached KOLKATA (9:45 PM).

Total cost of this tour was Rs. 55,000 approx (including shopping, fooding, cab costs, train & air fare, hotel fare, etc.).

It was a fantastic tour inspite of the hectic schedules and journey. We have enjoyed every moment of journey. Thanks God for our Safe journey. Also wants to give a special thanks to Velu.

Regards,
kkgcom.

I have planned a trip to Bangalore-Mysore-ooty-Chennai in coming October as given below:-
DAY ACTIVITY
1----- >START BY 12245 HWH-YPR Duronto EXP at 11.00hrs
2---->Reach YPR at 16.00 hrs, stay at Bangalore
3---->Bangalore to Banerghatta National Park (30km), park Safari & then
to Mysore (135km = 4hrs), visit Mysore Palace , VB Garden
4----> Mysore to Bandipura by car (80km=2 hr), visit Forest in the afternoon
5----> Bandipura to OOTY (50KM) via Madhumalai forest
6----> Ooty--relaxation
7----> Ooty to Kunnur & then move towards Coimbatore to catch 12674Cheran exp 22.40 /12672 Nilgiri exp from Metupalayam at 19.45 hrs
8-----> Reach Chennai at 6.45 hrs /5.05 hrs, visit chennai (golden Beach,Mahabalipuram & Ice House after return to chennai in the afternoon) , catch 12840 Chennai Mail at 23.45 hrs
9----> On train
10---> Reach HWH at 4.10hrs

Now I have some questions ( we will be 4 adults & 1 child):-
1) If a hire a car from Bangalore for the trip upto OOty i.e. for Day 3-Day 5 how much would be the TENTATIVE cost for NON AC SUV?
2) Will it be better to continue day 4 upto OOty in the following fashion-
Leave from Mysore --->move upto Bandipura & then if it crosses 9.30 then move----> Madhumalai & do safari at madhumalai ? Which one offers better safari Bandipura or Madhumalai?
3) Mr. Velu you have mentioned that to make a safari in bandipura car has to be from Mysore so if we hire a car from Bangalore WILL WE NOT BE ABLE TO DO THE SAFARI AT BANDIPURA / we will have to hire a car there only?
4) Any idea about Banerghata Lion/Tiger Safari (I have gone through the website but I need information from horse's mouth ) ?
5) Idea about any clean budget hotel near YPR Bangalore ( non AC rS1500/- DAY) & CONTACT number of authentic travel agents in Bangalore-
Please help on my queries
Thanks in advance
