We are looking at coming to India in August and or July with 3 children ages, 2,11 and 18. Please can anyone suggest the "must see" places to go to BUT we would love to stay in more authentic, smaller and more local accommodation if possible.

We were thinking of northern areas to escape monsoon to begin with perhaps and maybe see some animals??? And then perhaps going down south to Kerala and Goa.

We would love to do some cooking lessons if possible.
Apologies if this doesn't make much sense but I really don't know where to start as I want to see it all !!!!

Most national parks are closed during monsoons from July - October.

Concentrate on either North or South instead of both. Read this forum to know about what places are there to see and then shortlist the places that you want to see.

I can't decide between the north or south - am I correct in thinking that if I stay north then we may not get as much of the monsoon? I am actually not too bothered by the rains as we live in Abu Dhabi so rain is a novelty! But happy to receive any advice and info.

I was thinking that delhI and then "golden triangle " look good but would love any info for places slightly off the beaten track and more rustic than the "big chain" type hotels

If we come for a month do you still think that we should only do the north or south and not both? I was thinking 3 weeks north and a week on a beach/houseboat in Goa or kerala

Goa in July or August is not the place if your looking for a beach vacation. The seas are to rough for swimming and most places will be closed. If you can postpone your trip a few months the weather will be more better.

Anywhere be open? I found a posting on here earlier saying that he had had a fab time in Goa in August but is is dated from 2002! Would you recommend staying up north then?

I see your from Abu Dhabi so I think the lush, tropical, green south with lots of water and rice paddies would be a paradise and real adventure for you. So I would keep it in. Humidity should be high.
