I would like to start a thread that describes my approach to planning a 4-week trip in India. The drive for this is a visit by my Professor and his wife (in their late 70's - Brits settled in Canada)in December 2010.

My attempt is to cover a few select places, some of which will be popular tourist places(e.g. Taj), such that the trip is not too rushed (e.g. visit a place just to say "I have been there"- although this will sometimes be inevitable), a bit relaxed, take advantage of overnight train journey's (e.g. Aishah gave me a great suggestion to use 1AC since my guests are senior citizens and they will get good discounts and this is their first visit to India).

This thread is a work-in-progress. I will be posting current plans, changing them as we go along with your input. I would appreciate if you could keep within the framework and let us not divert the thread - please post your own queries in other, more appropriate threads. I will ask many questions with the hope that someone has already done what I am requesting information about - of course, I shall do my homework and go through the vast amount of information that is already collected within IM.

I shall begin with a rough outline of the places that I am planning:

1. First leg: Delhi-Agra-Ranthanbhore-Rajasthan-Mumbai.
2. 2nd leg: Mumbai-Goa-Kerala backwaters
3. 3rd leg: Niligiri-Bangalore-Hyderabad.
4. 4th leg: Puri-Konark-Bhubaneswar-Delhi (flight).

One of the things I need to ascertain from my guests is "what are your interests"? Knowing them, I think they are very open and would want to "see it all". Well, that is not going to be possible given the time-frame. In fact, the plan that I have written above (the 4 legs) is already too ambitious, it will need to be pared down. That is what this exercise is all about. Something manageable, interesting, circuitous, combination of train-air-car where appropriate. If at the end of this exercise we come up with an "ideal 4-week trip of India" than all IMers can benefit from the information and modify it to suit their particular interests as they feel like.

Cheers

My expertise for the moment is limited to south India. So after they have done the backwaters (assuming), A train journey could be undertaken from Kerala to Coimbatore. They could then undertake the NMR narrow gauge train up to Ooty. After seeing the surrounds, they can stop at the Bandipur wild life sanctuary and take a safari tour. Then leave for Bangalore, though it would be a shame to give Mysore a miss. Mysore palace, zoo, and the gardens are something to be experienced. Mysore to bangalore can be done by train, so can Bangalore to Hyderabad.

Thanks, yes, I am planning on similar lines. From Bangalore they could visit Mysore for an overnight trip and then on return to Bangalore to Hyderabad.

Cheers
