Hi Everyone...

Ive been reading these forums for the last few months and thought it was about time i posted!

Me and OH are going to India for 4 weeks on 27th Sept, returning on 25th Oct and we are very excited

Its the first time there for us both so although we have done an itinerary, no doubt there will be some interesting changes and/or impossible things on there!

Itinerary as follows:

28TH SEPTEMBER ARRIVE IN DELHI 8AM.

1st OCTOBER TRAIN TO AGRA.
3rd OCTOBER TRAIN FROM AGRA TO SAWAI MADHOPUR SAFARI BOOKED FOR 3 NIGHTS

6th OCTOBER TRAIN TO JAIPUR
7th OCTOBER TTRAIN FROM JAIPUR TO JODPHUR & TRAIN FROM JODPHUR TO JAIPUR
8th OCTOBER TRAIN FROM JAIPUR TO UDAIPUR

10th OCTOBER TRAIN FROM UDAIPUR TO MUMBAI

12th OCTOBER TRAIN FROM MUMBAI TO GOA

16th OCTOBER TRAIN FROM GOA TO SHORANUR
17th OCTOBER TRAIN FROM SHORANUR TO COIMBATORE & TRAIN FROM COIMBATORE TO METTUPALAIYAM
18th OCTOBER STEAM TRAIN FROM METTUPALAIYAM TO OOTACAMUND (OOTY)
19th OCTOBER TRAIN FROM OOTY TO METTUPALAYAM & TRAIN FROM METTUPALAYUM TO COIMBATORE
20th OCTOBER TRAIN FROM COIMBATORE TO KOCHI

23rd OCTOBER TRAIN FROM KOCHI TO TRIVANDRUM
24th OCTOBER FLIGHT FROM TRIVANDRUM TO MUMBAI
25th OCTOBER FLIGHT BACK TO MANCHESTER

So - any thoughts on the above?
We are a little worried about finding some accommodation in Mettupalaiyum as i cant find anything that is looking anywhere near clean! and there is nothing on AirBnB for that area.

Thanks for reading this far!

Oops - forgot to add. We have purchased an India 30 day rail pass and have booked reservations for the above trains. Im assuming these are easy to change/rearrange should our plans change.

Budget wise, we have around 3000 to spend for the 4 weeks so assume that will be enough to get us pretty much everything we need, but can up that if needed. Our flights and train tickets are paid, as is some accommodation.

I cannort comment on the itinerary as I would never cover so much in one 4-week trip. But knowing the landscape, the below should be reconsidered:

Quote:
6th OCTOBER TRAIN TO JAIPUR
7th OCTOBER TTRAIN FROM JAIPUR TO JODPHUR & TRAIN FROM JODPHUR TO JAIPUR
8th OCTOBER TRAIN FROM JAIPUR TO UDAIPUR
From Jodhpur take a car or bus to Udaipur. It will be much less time and you will save a night. Did you intend to go to Jodhpur and return on the same train? What was the point?

I think you want to cover too much in your 4 weeks. Changing tickets on short notice will be difficult unless there is a Foreign Tourist Quota for that train.

About Mettuplayam we stayed in the Nanda Lodge. Reasonable enough for a night. We reserved the room by phone the day before we arrived.

I agree, you are trying to cover way too much. Travelling in India can often be wearying and draining and since this is your first time I'd suggest you take things slower, which is to say spend more time in fewer places rather than make an attempt to quickly cover so many sites.

Welcome to IM.

You are spending a lot of time on trains. The entire week from 16th - 20th your on a train each day, that's a lot of travelling. Why not have 3 weeks in the north and then fly south for a last week on the beach to relax? Or the opposite way around.

I had similar problems with my planning and had to cut short time I spent in places and did miss seeing things... it just means you get to come back for a 2nd trip

I completely agree with this, and second that constantly moving on in India will be exhausting and eat away at days of your trip, and may leave you with the feeling that you're not seeing much except stations and insides of trains (not even much view through windows if you go in AC class!) 3 day or 4 day periods staying somewhere comfortable and amazing will allow recharge, plus the chance to explore places and get beyond the obvious guidebook sites.

Hi everyone and thanks for the replies!

We have taken everything said on board and changed some of the itinerary to make things a little more relaxed (hopefully!)
So, the new schedule is as follows...

28TH SEPTEMBER ARRIVE IN DELHI 8AM.

1st OCTOBER TRAIN TO AGRA.

3rd OCTOBER TRAIN FROM AGRA TO SAWAI MADHOPUR SAFARI BOOKED FOR 3 NIGHTS

6th OCTOBER TRAIN TO JAIPUR

8th OCTOBER FLIGHT TO MUMBAI

10th OCTOBER OVERNIGHT TRAIN TO GOA

16th OCTOBER OVERNIGHT TRAIN TO COIMBATORE

18th OCTOBER STEAM TRAIN TO OOTACAMUND (OOTY)

20th OCTOBER TRAIN/CAR TO KOCHI

24th OCTOBER FLIGHT FROM TRIVANDRUM TO MUMBAI

25th OCTOBER FLIGHT BACK TO MANCHESTER

Does that look any better? We figured having 6 full days in Goa should recharge our batteries a little and have decided against so many of the trains.

Also we are looking at Agonda in Goa - has anyone been around the beginning of October? A fair few of the beach huts look to be closed until 1st November

Thanks

Lisa & Andrew x

Yes, I think this is a better itinerary.

There is just one problem
Quote:
16th OCTOBER OVERNIGHT TRAIN TO COIMBATORE
October 16 is a Thursday and this train runs only at Friday, see erail.

Maybe it is an option to change trains in Mangalore. Click on 'via' on the erail screen and choose Mangalore Jn to get a list off all these trains.
