Hello to all the experienced travelers out there and thanks in advance for any help you can offer. I'm traveling alone to India on 1/20, arriving in Delhi and heading straight to Dehradun for 2 week meditation retreat which ends Sunday Feb 5th. My return flight out of Delhi is Thursday Feb 9th late in the evening. I was wondering what would be some good ways of using my free days-- had thought about going to Mussoorie and/ or Rishikesh but open to any recommendations. Had thought about Bodh Gaya but likely too far for such a short amount of time. Had also thought about Corbett Park.
I'm a 50+ woman traveling on my own, and would compromise a bit of adventure for feeling safe/ secure.

Many thanks,
Sherry

You basically have 3 full days. I would spend 2 days in Mussorie, Landaur (Spell?) and one day in Rishikesh. Bodh Gaya is way too far and too much effort from Dehradun.
Let us know how the retreat worked for you!

Is this a sequestered retreat ? People in DDN do head out to Mussoorie as it is 30-45 minutes by car on a good day (traffic becomes horrible at times) You could visit nearby places if you have weekend or Sunday off.

I do think there will be a couple of outings during the retreat (at Mindrolling monastery in Clement Town), so wondering if indeed we'll get to Mussoorie during the retreat. Good point. Other than any group outing, we will be at Mindrolling the entire time. Any additional thoughts?

Right, it's really only 3 full days. Not sure yet how I'll get back to Delhi airport or how early I need to leave from Rishikesh or whereever I end up at end of the 3 days. But sounds like you think 1 day in Rishikesh is enough? A friend of mine who has recently returned from a month in India spent a week there, and enjoyed the Sanskriti hotel there. Any additional thoughts would be most welcome. Thank you!

One day in either place is not enough or for that matter 3 days in any one of those places may not be enough!

I prefer to spend more time in Mussorie and around than in Rishikesh. It is just a personal thing. Since you are interested in Meditation etc, Rishikesh might be a better choice for you.

Thanks for your reply. Any recommendations for where to stay and/ or eat in Mussoorie and Rishikesh?

Much appreciated,
Sherry

My memory of both places is dated. I lived in Dehradun for 8 years but it was in the seventies!! I hope some other IMer jumps in here and give you some suggestions. Dilli Wala is one of those people who is quite knowledgeable about that area. Please search some other threads with Dehradun as a topic. You are bound to get good info.

Good Luck!

Thank you! I found out that the retreat group will make an overnight trip to Mussoorie, so I'm going to suppress my planning tendencies and keep the last few days open for now, figuring I'll land somewhere interesting and it will all work out well....
