Hi Everybody,

This is Venkat,in my early 30's,staying in Europe for the past 10 years and now would like to make a trip for 9 days in the end of August.I'm an Indian, hope you should have guessed by my name, and this would be my first trip to North India.

We are a group of 6 people, where 4 of us are in our early 30's and 2 are in the late 50's.

I've been going through these forums and I am amazed at the depth of information I could gather here and firstly I should thank the moderator for creating such a fantastic site.

We would like to see Delhi,Agra,Haridwar, Rishikesh and Manali in 9 days !!!! I'm sure this is too less a time for covering all these places, but this is the max we could have.

I've made a rough Itenary and please feel free to correct me, suggest me or let me know if some part of it is completely un realistic. Having said that, since my dates and timelines are fixed, please base you suggestions only for these dates.

Aug 23rd, Sun - Arrive in Delhi at 12.30, book a hotel near
Karol bagh or Pahad Ganj.Visit Akshardham temple
stay until the music mountain is comeplte and
return to lodge.

24th, Mon - Planning to take a Dalhi day trip with Southern
travels or others.I heard that Monday most of the
tourist places are closed, so am bit confused what
to really see ?? Are these travels really worth or
is it better for us to hop on and off using public
transport or taxi ??
Take the mussourie exp at 21.00 and leave for
Haridwar.

25th, Tue - Arrive at Hardiwar 6 am, sight seeing Haridwar &
Rishikesh and drive back to Delhi during night.

26th, Wed - Take 4095 Himalyan queen at 06 am arrive kalka at
11.10 and take 12.10 himalyan queen to Simla.I heard
a lot about this trip, 103 tunnels, etc.. Is it
worth ?? Arrive at Simla have dinner and leave to
Manali by bus.It is a long journey, but wanted to
consider owing to the Himalyan trip.If not worthy,
Please suggest other faster alternatives ....
27th, Thur - Arrive in Manali, sight seeing

28th, Fri - Manali sight seeing

29th, Sat - Kullu sight seeing and take Volvo from manali to
Delhi

30th, Sun - Arrive in Delhi, sight seeing, complete the pending
ones from the 24th and overnight stay in Delhi
31st, Mon - Leave to Agra by 7.10 Taj express, see Taj,fort, etc
and leave for Vijaywada by taking the Garib Rath at
18.00

Thanks in Advance.

Regards,
Venkat

It would be great if you could squeeze McLeod Ganj in there too, it's a really vibrant town with a good community and loads going on, yoga, massage, cooking, language, music courses... and of course there's the Dali Lama's Temple and Tibetan museum. You'll also find some amazing food, and music nights at places like Khana Nirvana on Temple Road. But of course you want to enjoy your 8 days and not be rushing trying to cram everything in and spending half the time travelling from place to place.

You could look into shaving off some travel time by going from Haridwar to Kalka for the toy train, rather than returning to Delhi at that point. The Himalayan Queen from Delhi to Kalka is not particularly interesting, but I loved loved loved the ride from Kalka to Shimla.

Dear Thirdreel,

Thanks for your suggestion about saving time by taking the Haridwar to Kalka, but do we have any trains going from Haridwar ?? The kalka - Simla himalayan express is at 12.10, so was wondering how do I reach in time from Haridwar ??

I would not take on overnight train from Delhi to Haridwar. A place that you can reach within 4 hours with a Shatabdi is not worth the trouble of a slow and noisy night-train. The afternoon Shatabdi leaves Delhi at 15:25 and reaches Haridwar at 19:30. A little too late for the evening Arati at the Ganga, but still possible to visit there at the Ghat to get a first impression. This would save you time for the following day.

You can take the train 2205 AC Special from Delhi to Haridwar. It leaves at midnight and gets you there at 4 o clock. Visiting the temples and ghats at dawn will surely be a great experience, and you'll get to spend more time in Rishikesh as well.

Online booking of HRTC buses is only for Volvo and Deluxe buses. The bus from Haridwar to Manali is an ordinary one. So you would not be able to book the tickets online.
http://himachal.nic.in/hrtc/route.asp this link will show you the timetable of all types of buses of HRTC

Thanks Rajared for providing me the link. As the service from Haridwar to manali is an Ordinary one, could you share your experiences about the travel. In our group we have two elderly people of age 60 and 50, so was wondering if the journey is OK or cubersome ??
