Hello there!
I'm new to India mike and this is my first post.
I'll be landing at Guwahati Airport (DEL to GAU) on 26th May at 8 am with my Parents and younger sister (13 year old) and have return tickets booked for 1st June at 5.30pm from Guwahati Airport (GAU to DEL).
So I have around 7 days and 6 nights to spend in North East India. What should my ideal itinerary be? (Keeping in mind that this is a family trip and other factors such as weather and cost)
Really looking forward to your suggestions/inputs.
Cheers!

Welcome to Indiamike.

You may want to look at similar threads below and form a rough itinerary. Others can help refine it for you. Also use the search function for relevant threads.

Hi Laksh Welcome to Indiamike. You can checkout my trip report of Meghalaya. It will give you some idea as I went there last year around the same time. You can form a rough itinerary and get it refined here like I did.

I found this itinerary designed by Karikor for your trip:

Day 1- Reach Guwahati. Proceed to Mawphlang. Enroute stop at Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls, Mawphlang Sacred Groves.Halt and
rest at MaplePine Farms at Mawphlang. (Guwahati Airport - Shillong = 120km + Shillong - Mawphlang = 25km)

Day 2 - Morning proceed to Mawlyngbna, check out the Krem Pomskei cave, Kshaid Umdingkain Waterfalls, the Sea-Urchin Fossils, the Iew Luri Lura legend site, the Mih-Umbah Artesian Well. After lunch do the Rafting at Umkhakoi Small Multipurpose Reservoir. Proceed to Mawphlang. Halt at Maple Pine Farms (Mawphlang - Mawlyngbna -Mawphlang = 100km)

Day 3- Do the David Scot Trail from Mawphlang to Lad Mawphlang. After Lad Mawphlang proceed to SOhra. Enroute visit the Garden of Caves at Laitmawsiang. Finally enjoy the sunset at Dain Thlen Falls. Halt at Sa-I-Mika. (12km David Scott Trek + Lad Mawphlang - Garden of Cave = 25km + Garden of caves - Sa-I-Mika - 20km)

Day 4 -Trek to the Double Decker Living Root Bridges. Swim in the Natural Pools after the Double Decker, visit the RainbowFalls at Nongriat. Halt at Sa-I-Mika .(Sa-i-mika - Tyrna = 40km (bothways + Tyrna- Nongriat =10km trek (bothways) )

Day 5 - Morning Do some Sohra Local Sightseeing. After lunch Procced to Mawlynnong. Halt atMawlynnong. ( Sohra Sightseeing= 40km + Sohra-Mawlynnong =100 km)

Day 6 - Explore Mawlynnong and the surrounding areas. After lunch Proceed to Shillong. Halt at Traveller's Nest in Ialong. ( Mawlynnong Sightseeing = 40km + Mawlynnong-Shillong = 100km)

Day 7 - Shillong Local SIghtseeing. Halt at Shillong (Shillong-Local Sightseeing = 40km)

Day 8 - Morning at 6-7am proceed to Umden. Check out Umden and then Proceed to Guwahati Airport. Reach Guwahati Airport. ( Shillong - Umden = 70km ;Umden - Guwahati Airport =70km)

Now the problem with this itinerary is:
1. It's for 8 days while I have just 7. So please suggest how to better manage the trip according to 7 days. Are there any places that we could add/subtract or combine?
2. I am not sure if this itinerary is okay for a Family trip. But I could be wrong. If you can vouch for that, it would be amazing.
3. Do you think David Scott trail is doable/safe at this time of the year? My parents in their late 40s and my 13-year-old younger sister will be accompanying me.

Thanks a lot for the helpful responses, I really appreciate this.
Cheers!

You can get the idea from my trip report and the places I covered too.

And of course Mandeep, I'd love to see your itinerary. It will be of great help!

@lakshverma

To reach out to Karikor, simply put a post in the Meghalaya forum. He's very active there. You being a new user may not have the PM function available.

For a family trip, I'd suggest to skip the Double Decker Bridge. Its almost 2000 steps worth of descend and ascend and can be very taxing. I'm not sure about the weather conditions there, but back when I was there, it was too humid - almost like a May evening Mumbai, only cooler.

Also, you may skip the Shillong site-seeing dedicated day since you are covering the major places on the first day itself. Other places on your list can be squeezed in on other days.

For the return route from Mawlynnong to Shillong, I'd suggest you use the route via Dawki - Jowai. This will enable you to cover Thadlaskein lake and Nartiang monoliths as well. There's also a waterfall near Thadlaskein that Karikor had suggested, but I've forgotten the name.

If its possible, try to squeeze in a night at the Pioneer Adventure Tours campsite at Shnonpdeng near Dawki - a gem of a place. Though I'm not sure if the camp is active at this time of the year.

Thanks Karikor, I heard that there's a Bandh by a local group in Meghalaya from 26th till 28th. Do you think it could have serious implications since it coincides with my trip?

Laksh,

Bandh has been reduced from 48 hours to only 24 hours from 26th 6pm to 27th 6pm. So try to be in Mawphlang today by 6pm and then enjoy the surroundings in Mawphlang.

Regards,

Karikor
