Am travelling to Garhwal for the first time. Will start at Haridwar (reaching from Kolkata), then to Rishikesh, Mussorie and Dehradun. Total time frame Haridwar to Haridwar is 7 days. Need to see lots of snow, so was thinking Chopta, Auli etc. Need help with a reasonable itinerary. Will be availing public transport or cab hire between places. Team has 2 elders and hence religious places kept in plan. Getting confused seeing so many places online. We are 4 ladies only. Heavy snow and freezing temperatures are not an issue, transportation and accomodation is. Please guide.

combine haridwar and rishikesh visit to 2nd day

3rd day go to rajaji early morning , the early you go more chance to view animals, rajai should not be missed

4th day afternoon go to mussorie , dehradun has become like any city in the planes, the famous falls of dehradun is allmost dry, but you can see it on route

5th day visit mussorie (kempty fall and others points) in morning.
now here yoy have to decide , if you want to see snow then go to in chakrata or the places near it . other wise you can go to dhanulti.

6th day - enjoy snow in chakrata / or visit kanatal and go to devaprayag

7th day - devaprayag to haridwar or chakrata to haridwar

In Jan we wont get snow in Dhanaulati? Where is Chakrata and how do we go? Our main object is to spend a day and night in heavy snow (team has some kids who want to play snowballs, so it is essential we stay amidst snow). Will chopta serve the purpose of snow?

chakrata is near mussourie, see the gmvn website for details. some other website also have details.
chopta is a heavenly place, you will get snow, only thing is hotels are not as good as other places. The GMVN was closed when we visited in march 2009.

We are going for a chandrashila snow trek in December, we have organized our trek through Unwind Outdoor. They are organizing everything for us. Earlier there was no good place in Chopta only Mayadeep and some guest house which were very basic, but from last year there is this wonderful camp that has come up with good amenities. If snow is your thing just go for Chopta as you are bound to see snow there in Jan. You can check the pictures and location here http://www.unwindoutdoor.com/camping-in-chopta

Have prepared a rough itinerary keeping everyones interests in mind from elders to kids (we are not booking any hotels, will be staying at dharamshalas after reaching, no prior booking made so far):

1. 12th late night reach Haridwar from Delhi
2. 13th day and night at Haridwar
3. 14th early morning Rajaji national park. After safari reach Rishikesh (here would like to know, if we do this, can we cover Rishikesh full tour in same day?) Night halt Rishikesh
4. 15th need to reach Rudraprayag. (Rate for cab or jeep, if anyone knows?). Should we leave Rishikesh early morning or we can leave around 12 noon?
5. 16th, Koteswar caves in morning, then to Ukhimath after lunch. How to go, transportation not known. Is it possible to tour Ukhimath in 2nd half? Night halt Ukhimath.
6. 17th Tour to Chopta and back to Ukhimath at night (is it possible instead to camp at Chopta? We would have loved an outdoor camping one night.
7. 18th Ukhimath to Rishikesh (again transportation not known. Do we get any cabs there or only buses? Cab rates.)
8. 19th Mussorie tour, night stay at Mussorie.
9. 20th tour to Dhanaulti and Chamba, then direct to Haridwar.
10. 21st go from Haridwar to Delhi.
Tour finish.

My queries:

1. Transportation queries, already higlighted above.
2. Our chopta trip is purely because we have promised kids snowman and snowball playing and outdoor camping. Do we get this at Dhanaulti? If yes we may not go down so far to Chopta, and can plan other places.
3. Surkhanda temple would get covered if we do only day trip on 20th to Dhanaulti and Chamba?
Please guide us. We ladies are solely dependent on this forum for guidance. I have been following this forum last 3 years for all my tour programmes.

Ukhimath is very small, hardly a hotel (there is GMVN below town) can see Ukhimath quite quickly - what to see except the local weaving which is very, very good indeed! Camping in Dhanaulti in January? - That is if you can get up there if the road is not fogged, snow blocked or iced up.. then anyway it's damn cold and dharamshalas as you know are limited in comfort -so anyway make sure you have adequate clothing.

Thanks. My rough itinery is laid out, please edit it accordingly. Our targets, after Haridwar Rishikesh Dehradun Mussorie and Rajaji are spending a day in snow for the kids and a night of camping if possible. We have never been to Uttarakhand before. So we need guidance.

You don't need to go all the way back to Rishikesh, then across to Mussoorie and up to Dhanaulti - shorter route is Rudraprayag, Srinagar, then West to near Tehri, cross and up to Chamba, Dhanaulti, Mussoorie, Dehradun. From Chamba as you reach near to Dhanaulti, the road climbs significantly and is very likely to be snowbound at that time, whether it's passable or not you will have to rely on local info upon reaching. 'Course if it is snowbound then you have yr snow eh!

If we follow this plan, how about it?

13th Haridwar
14th Rishikesh
15th Mussorie
16th Hire car, go To Chakrata
17th Chakrata
18th Chakrata to Devprayag
19th Devprayag to Rishikesh
20th Leave by night train

1. Please tell us route from Chakrata to Devprayag, and time required.
2. We are missing out Rajaji National park, really want to stay one night there. As per existing itinary only 20th daytime is free. Please suggest modification in itinary. How much time does it take from Devprayag to Rishikesh if we start out from there after lunch say 1pm?

Thanks. I am not sure there is any road from Chakrata to Devprayag? Would be a great help if someone can say for sure, esp the time taken.
From Devprayag to Rishikesh is how many hours?

devaprayag to rishikesh is easy, few hours. less than 3 hours if i remember correctly

from chakrata you have to come back towards mussorie , then go to devaprayag. find the time for chakrata to mussorie. the roadmap of mussorie, dehhradin, rishikesh, devprayag is readily available in net .
the road from mussorie goes to devprayag via dehradun - rishikesh (this is the road by which you reach mussorie) the road condition is very good.

there is another road from mussorie which goes via dhanaulti - tehri dam- srinagar - devpryag. we travelled through it in march, road condition is bad.

one suggestion - hire a car for the whole tour, it will save cost also you don't have to find car at each location.

we got a qualis from dehradun at 1800 per day ( all inclusive). i can send you contact of the car owner.

Yes please provide contact detail. Once we leave towards Mussorie, till we are back to Haridwar, we do require a car. Is sumo cheaper option or we need qualis? We are 9 adults.
