Hi, my husband and I are experienced independent travelers going to India for the first time. We're flying in and out of Delhi (frequent flier miles, so worth a bit of inconvenience because the flights are free!). We'll be in India almost all of Dec and half of Jan.

We like to stay long enough in a place to get a bit of a feel for it, rather than cram too many places and too much travel into our trips and risk having the whole thing meld into one big blur.

With that in mind, here's our tentative plan:

Delhi, 2 days
Rishikesh, 5 days
Agra, 1 day
Varanasi, 6 days
Bodh Gaya, 5 days
[traveling by train between all the above, then flying to Kerala]

Traveling around Kerala, a couple of weeks
Finish up with a week in Goa

Then fly back to Delhi the day before our late-night flight back home.

Questions:
1) Given this will all take place in Dec/Jan, and we'd like to keep things as fluid as possible, will we need to book train trips ahead of time, and how far ahead?

2) From a scheduling perspective, what will be the most challenging connections in our planned itinerary?

3) From Kerala to Goa, would you suggest train or flight?

Any advice welcome and appreciated!

On railway sites as http://erail.in/ it is easy to find out how many seats are available in trains you need.
When there are a few seats left on then book them by http://www.irctc.co.in/ or one of the other booking sites.

Something else, it the period of your itinerary there is a great chance of fog in the north. Trains will be delayed then.

Vonkla, thank you SO much for the erail.in site information! I had already found the booking sites but that additional URL will be invaluable, I'm sure.

Also, thanks for the mention of fog. I had heard about that in relation to airline delays, but had not considered it for train delays. But of course, it makes perfect sense that fog would affect ground travel, too.

We leave in two weeks and are getting very excited about our trip! Thanks again for your assistance.
