We are organizing our trip to Northern India in February 2010 and we are planning to spend 3 weeks and a half in the following places :

Delhi - Varanasi - Agra - Gwalior - Fatehpur Sikri / Bharatpur - Ranthambore - Bundi / Chittorgarh - Udaipur - Kumbalgarh / Ranakpur - Jodhpur - Jaisalmer - Bikaner - Mandawa - Pushkar - Jaipur - Delhi.

We know that there is a lot to see and we are wondering whether it is really worth going to all of these places if this means to be in the rush all the time.

In particuliar, do you think that Bikaner, Mandawa and Gwalior are real must, or should we skip those places to spend more time elsewhere ?

Thanks in advance for your advice !!

hi idy.
i loved bikaner. a frontier-town feel. nice getting lost in the maze of the old town.
watch out for angry xenophobic dogs! access to kolayat (sleepy stoned town that comes alive for festivals) and the rat-temple. gorgeous beat gypsy people.
mandawa was also a really nice place! chilled. amazing baoris. (my pilgimage places in rajasthan... you can feel the process of desertification over the centuries.) goats herded past. a great main street and gate. i would stop there again for sure. hotel shekawati is friendly and cool. (i left an aussie flavoured mural in the bathroom of our room.)
have a great trip

I did a similar trip a few years ago, I had 25 days, hired a car/driver for some of it.

Spent about three to four days in each location, in January. Drove the usual 5 - 6 hrs between cities during the day. No Agra, Varanasi, FS, etc. Left that for another trip.

So Delhi to Jaipur by train

Jaipur to Pushkar by car: only two-three hours away.

Pushkar to Bikaner, Bikaner to Jaisalmer, Jaisalmer to Jodhpur, Jodhpur to Udaipur via Ranakpur, then flew from Udaipur to Delhi.

In retrospect, one night in Pushkar would have been plenty. Jodhpur would have been a better three night stop than 4. An overnight around Ranakpur would have been better than a one hour stop there between Jodhpur and Udaipur.

Have a great trip and make sure to give us some reviews of it all when you're back.
