Hi everyone, I'm leaving next week for a 5 week trip to India and I need some advice!

A little about the travelers:
- Two people: We are both in our late 20's, and have backpacked through central america, europe, US, and morocco. This is our first trip to India (and Asia, for that matter).
- We are trying to travel on a budget ($25 dollars or less per day, per person)
- We are very easy going and are looking for an adventure. We want to experience the food, music, yoga, spirituality, and general culture shock. We will travel mostly by train and are not particular about cleanliness.

Here is what we've got so far:

- 1.5 weeks: Fly into Delhi, train to Agra, train to Varanasi. Explore Varansi.
- 1 week: Flight from Varanasi to Cochin (already booked). Explore Cochin, Munnar, backwaters
- 2 weeks: Train to Rajasthan; Explore Pushkar, Jaisalmer, Udaipur, Jodhpur
- .5 week: Buffer time to make it back to Delhi and fly home.

Here's the question:

I really want to see Hampi and perhaps Gokarna on the way up to Rajasthan from Cochin. We were initially thinking of taking the direction train from Cochi to Delhi and then heading to Rajasthan from there. But, is it possible to divert the travels over to Hampi on this route? (I understand there aren't direct trains.)

Is it unreasonable to think that we could get from Cochin to Hampi to Rajasthan and fly out of Delhi in 2.5 weeks? Or, is there something we should cut out?

Thanks so much for your input!! This website has been an amazing help.

Ummm You have got most the places i would love to see.
The plan as it is very feasible. The extensions to goa and hampi though might be a stretch and you will feel you are running from one place to another.

one reservation i have is why are you travelling from north-south-north.Ideally Delhi-varanasi-agra-jaipur-jodhpur-jaisalmer-udaipur-fly trivandrum(finish kerala)-Delhi should be the way. That way the connections are pretty much straight forward.

I ideally would fit hampi/gokarna if i had any free time.
Delhi-varanasi-agra-jaipur-jodhpur-jaisalmer-udaipur-fly trivandrum-munnar-allepey bacwater-cochin-goa-hampi-bangalore-Delhi.given Hampi and goa are places where most like to chill ,you wouldnt want to rush it in couple of days and you might do justice to the place.

Is it unreasonable to think that we could get from Cochin to Hampi to Rajasthan and fly out of Delhi in 2.5 weeks? Or, is there something we should cut out?
Hampi is kinda of place you wouldnt want to miss. Its pretty much ruins but you might like it as you can idle and take it at a bit easier pace.Cycle around and laze.

Yes the plan is unreasonable if you add Goa.Goa and Hampi would take a week solid. Not advisable.

Thanks for the advice!

I've spent the last few days researching train routes and options, although I did this before searching the availability of these trains. I was horrified to find out that every single train I had been planning on taking over the course of the next 5 weeks is waitlisted!!!

Does anyone have experience with being waitlisted on trains? How likely is it that nothing will open up? Most of the spots are waitlisted at around 10 people so far for 2AC, and around 30 for Sleeper.

Should I just wait to try and book when I get to India? (Will booking agents there be able to help me figure out creative work-arounds for my routes?)

Very nervous,
amanda

You can use tourist quota when in India if your already booked (wait listed) tickets don't get confirmed.
pls go thru the below articles they will surely be helpful for you;

It's not always quite so straightforward as the rule of thumb quoted here. A lot depends on whether you are doing the full route of a train or just a sector in the middle. An example of the latter is Agra-Varanasi for which some trains are only allocated a 2AC quota of 4 berths. To get confirmed from WL 10 in a situation like this is much less likely.

If you are happy to go with the flow just wing it. If you want a little bit of certainty try to book ahead.

There is some real expertise on this forum and you could get some excellent advice by posting your proposed trains, dates of travel, class of travel on the thread below.
