Hi, I want to do my third solo trip to India in December after a 9 yr break, and want to revisit my favourite places (see above). I will be there for three weeks.

For some reason, I am battling to get an itinerary going without backtracking. My questions are:
*should I enter via Delhi or Mumbai? South Africa-Mumbai is MUCH cheaper than the Delhi option, but I guess it would then take longer to arrive at my places of interest.
*any suggestions for on an itinerary that does not involve backtracking? I am willing to fly once (twice, tops). I do like train travel a lot.
*thinking of including Jodhpur and Bundi too, have never been there. Thoughts?

Thank you

Is South Africa to Mumbai + a flight to Varanasi more than the cost of SA to Delhi?

Then a Varanasi to Pathankot train.

Then maybe Pathankot to Ambala, and an overnight train from Ambala to Bikaner (or Deshnok)(direct train has poor arrival time), then after a day or 2, a bus to Jaisalmer.

Then on to Jodhpur and a train to Kota (for Bundi), then a train from Kota back to Mumbai.

If it's much cheaper, then by all means fly into Mumbai. You may book a domestic flight via cleartrip for the remaining. Consider a flight into Jodhpur if you're thinking of that place and then a train to Jaisalmer to start off. Another train to Delhi for a bus to Mcleodganj. From here, take a bus to Chandigarh for boarding the kalka mail to mughal sarai (MGS). There are two other trains per week to Varanasi Jn directly but the day may or may not work for you. There are buses possible via Haridwar but the train's much more comfortable. For the last leg, fly out of Varanasi to Mumbai and back home.

x-posted with Steven. different ideas, same result though.

There is also an overnight train from Jodhpur to Pathankot, see here.

You can catch the same train in Lalgarh which has a direct train connection Jaisalmer. Lalgarh is near Bikaner.

Have you been to Amritsar?

If not, VA's plan could be tweaked to go back from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur then get an overnight train to Makhu for a bus to Amritsar (60km), then on to Pathankot and MG.

I think a better option from MG would be a bus to Pathankot then an overnight train to Varanasi, the train is just under 1 hour longer than the Kalka Mail, but the journey through the hills should be shorter.

From Varanasi you could fly to Mumbai, or take your choice of places to visit on the way by train, Kota (for Bundi) doesn't work out too well as far as train times go, but Orchha (near Jhansi) is a great place and timings work out OK.

Bhopal could be another option, so could Ajanta & Ellora Caves (train from Varanasi or Jhansi to Bhusaval or Jalgaon).

If you had the time you could go Varanasi-Khajuraho-Orchha-Mumbai.

My first post was perhaps the simplest in terms of transport and including all on your list, but finishing with Varanasi then Khaj/Orchha/Ellora/Ajanta is certainly a more attractive finish to a trip.

Now another thing bothering me is the weight limit on domestic flights...I will be over 15kgs for sure. Perhaps I should rather fly into and from Delhi.
