I'm trying to plan a trip to India from April 10 to April 27. The best option I've found is to fly into Delhi and out of Mumbai. (I also have the option of flying into and out of Delhi or Mumbai although its slightly more expensive). I'm a 20-something solo female traveler. I've been living in Asia now for 2 year and have traveled around much of east and southeast Asia so I'm fairly comfortable but India is intimidating and seems like a whole new ball game. Being such a large country I just want a "best of" (if you will) and am open to anything.

Regardless, my tentative plan is ...

Delhi (immediately get on night train) - Varanasi – Agra – Jaipur – Jaisalmer – Delhi – Mumbai

I'm a train freak so I'd like to take advantage of India's awesome system, but I also don't want to miss out. I've had some people suggest Jodhpur and Udaipur.

Does this sound like a decent plan? Am I missing anything big? I'm open to any suggestions! (and am willing to do southern India if people think that's better/safer)

Thank you so much!!!

The first part of your journey looks fine.
I wonder why you want to return to Delhi after Jaisalmer.

Better is to go to Jodhpur and from there to Mumbai.
Eventually take a bus from there to Udaipur.

If you want to see the possibilities of the train system see erail.in.

I was under the impression that I had to go to Delhi to get to Mumbai from Jaisalmer. So could I potentially do ... Jaisalmer Jodhpur Mumbai?

I've heard mixed reviews if Delhi is worth it, thoughts?

Also, is it safe to travel as a solo female in India?

During one of our trips we stayed 2 days in Delhi and visited a lot of monuments. That was good, since we don't like big cities we never returned other then to take a flight home.
