Hi guys,

I'm planning to visit Kerala/Goa/Hampi/Mysore/Madurai next February.

Planning to flying into Kochi and out of Madurai (although flights aren't booked yet so there's flexibility there). This is my second trip to India; I visited the north 6 years ago. I'm 28, travelling solo, and hoping to stick to a budget of about 2000 rupees/day. I'm also aware that train tickets on some routes are hard to come by so I'm planning to book these in advance.

Here goes:
Day 1: arrive in Kochi (early evening)
2, 3: Kochi
4, 5: Munnar (catch the bus from Kochi morning of day 4; visit tea plantations and do a bit of trekking).
6, 7: Alleppey (bus from Munnar morning of day 7. Hang out, hire a bike, maybe do some kayaking).
8: Boat trip from Alleppey to Kollam
9: Hang out in Kollam before catching overnight train to Goa.
10, 11, 12: Arrive in Goa mid-morning, head to Agonda beach. Chill-out and beach time for the next couple of days.
13, 14, 15, 16: Catch train to Hampi on day 12. Spend 3 full days in Hampi before catching overnight train to Mysore.
17, 18: Mysore (one night, two days). Overnight train to Madurai.
19: Full day in Madurai.
20: Morning flight out of Madurai.

It would also be cool to visit Trichy and Thanjavur, but with the current itinerary, I won't have enough time. Any advice about whether it's worth cutting out one of the places above to go there?

Any thoughts? Insufficient time in any places (or too much time)? Any tips from all the wise minds here would be much appreciated!

Sorry, just noticed a couple of typos in there - bus from Munnar to Alleppey would be on day 6, and train from Goa to Hampi/Hospet would be on day 13 :-)

The boat trip from Alleppey to Kollam is not the best way to explore the backwaters.
Better is to go by local ferries around Alleppey or a day trip out of Kochi, organized by the KTDC.

If you cut down your time in Alleppey/Kollam it is possible to include Trichy/Thanjavur after Mysore.
See here on erail for the train information.
