I'm considering areturn to India thsi November for a 4th visit. Thsu far I was in Ladakh in 2007, Rajasthan in 2010 and kerala/Tamil Nadu in 2012. One of the important destinations for me this time will be Amritser, and I need to create an itinerary with this in mind. One idea is to return from Amritser and spend my time in Gujarat. I know it s quite a distance The other idea is to continue east from Delhi to Varanasi via Khajuraho. I'm just starting to throw some idea around and am open to suggestions.

Thanks. That looks very interesting. I have considered to going to Varanasi and have read mixed reviews of the experience.

Varanasi as a place to visit for a few days may not be all that good, there is not all that much to 'see/do', and it can feel oppressive and even threatening. My information may be slightly out of date as I haven't been for a while, but I recall few decent eating places and very hit-and-miss accomodation options.
On the other hand, I have spent hours sitting by the Ganges at Varanasi watching life, and of course death role past. And put in many kilometres wandering the alleys in the old city, a great place to get lost as you will always find the river sooner or later to get bearings. But I have always been there with a primary purpose beyond sightseeing (music study in my case), and I know several people who have just gone to visit and not enjoyed themselves.
If you go, excursions to nearby Sarnath and Ramnagar are worthwhile escapes from the city.

My impression is that s it more about the experience than site seeing.

Hi Aarosh, kindly guide with relevant time/days to spend at each destination, considering I do not have any restriction time-wise. At the same time I would not want to just waste time as well.

Thank you for your asstistance.

Amristar is good for 2 days, Dharamshala / Mcleodganj is good for 3-4 days, Rewalsar for a day or two and Shimla and around for 4-5 days.

For places to see in Himachal Pradesh see http://hptdc.nic.in/welcome.htm
