RAC gets you a confirmed 'seating' place and you have to share the berth with the other person. If its your friend, then its perfect (almost - the better thing is a confirmed berth). But the other person can also be a random person.
RAC gets you entry in compartment and a place to seat. (way better than a GNWL)
Sar Pass Trek , Rohtang, Munnar, Badrinath Kedarnath, Vaishnodevi, Goa, VOF, Kedarkantha, Kuari Pass, Brahmatal Trek

I will take a sleeper berth ticket over a GNWL. Infact I may book both if I can, cancel sleeper class if the higher class gets confirmed. I atleast have a place to sleep comfortable.

PS - checked what vonkla was referring to - I would have picked up the seats in SL (only 12 remaining). Also based on what VA says - the 3rd AC has almost 90% + chance of getting confirmed. But 100% in SL is pretty good compared to 90% in 3rd AC. If you can - book both if you want to try 3rd AC. Else if you are comfortable with SL for 1 night, don't bother. (Note - it may be cold and no beddings are provided in SL class.)

Snotty's plan seems good..i did the same on my tickets from Delhi to Agra.

It seems that indian rail does not have problems with someone booking tickets in different classes on the same train..

It does cost a genuine traveler a berth when the AC tickets get confirmed and you are unable to cancel the lower class berth. But I guess you can't have everything.

My suggestion is to see if you can leave earlier from Udaipur and fly to delhi and incorporate the Agra visit during your stay in Delhi ..

If you want to see the Taj at sunrise ( and I think it is the best time ) Can either go by road or train to Agra and have a one nights stay and return the next day..

Depending on where you are staying in Delhi , road might be easier . There are fast trains like the Gatimaan express from NZM to Agra Cantt..These are usually available even closer to the date of travel but then you have to factor in the trip to and from the hotel where you are staying. Not a big issue in Agra but can be well over an hour or even extending longer to 2 hours depending on which part of Delhi you plan to stay.

Also remember that the Taj is closed for tourists on Fridays while planning your itinerary.

Have you tried in a higher class than you intially planned on the same trains..

Hi there, thanks for your reply. Yes I have checked the 1AC initially and 0 seats left and only left with WL. My plan was to actually to visit Taj Mahal on Sunday morning, which is the 10th Feb (I was supposed to take a train at 10.20pm from Udaipur and arrive Agra on the 9th), and Agra fort later in the noon and shoot to Delhi in the evening. Sleep one night in Delhi, hangaround for half a day then board my flight at Delhi in the night. I have to be at the airport by 7.30pm (flight is at 10.30pm).

However since the above plan won't work out, and I have checked for train Udaipur - Agra Cantt for 9th Feb, there are 0 seat avail in 1AC, 5RAC seats in 2AC and there are still some seats avail for 3AC. Taking this train means I'm arriving Agra on 10th Feb in noon. Probably will take a rest, and go for evening tour at Agra fort, stay a night. On the 11th we will visit Taj Mahal at 6am, and hire a driver/take the train to Delhi right after checking out to catch our flight. Do you think it's do-able?

Question now is should I book the RAC 2tier AC (and might be sharing a berth for 12hours) or go ahead with 3tier AC for the both of us. Some friends advised us to not go lower than 2nd tier as it is our first train trip in India...but if it is not that bad, I should probably just brave through the journey and book 3tier AC for peace of mind?

Hi Aarosh, yeap, just checked and found the 3AC to be available on the 9th Feb

Do you guys think it would be enough time for me to get on the road from Agra to Delhi in time for my flight? Say I leave Agra by 1pm. With traffic and such, I should be able to arrive Delhi airport by 7pm, right?

Thanks so much for your replies dear all. Helped me a lot!

That should be plenty of time. We did it in 3.5 hrs last October but left Delhi at 6 AM or so..

I think the congestion will be after you enter Delhi and onwards to the airport .

Thank you all!

I have finally secured 2 upper berths on tier 3AC on the 9th, in the same B2 coach with my friend, phew, it's a huge relief!
Will shoot to the Delhi airport right upon checking out around noon on the 11th Feb and chill at Delhi airport til my flight then.
Have a great week, hopefully I will get to share some nice photos when I return!

If you leave Jaipur overnight on day 2, you can do jodhpur too. Proceed to Jaisalmer from there. Rest all seems fine to me.
