Let me start by saying I'm very thankful for this website. I am a photographer and my girlfriend and I will be going to India for the first time at the end of March. We're both in our 30's and will be traveling on what would probably fall into the "high budget" category I saw noted on a previous posting.

We arrive in Delhi and 2 days later, we head to Dehra Dun. This part of our itinerary has us in Uttaranchal for about 1 week. I would be very happy to hear suggestions for interesting places to visit (especially for a photographer) that don't take days of travel to reach. Some places I'm considering are Mussoorie, Hardwar and Ananda. Any thoughts on these and other places in the area? Places to stay? Visit?

From there we fly to Bhubaneswar, spending 1 more week in that part of Orissa. I will photograph the festival of Ashokastami in Bhubaneswar and then likely visit Puri and Konark. I'm considering a trip to Chilika Lake as well. Again, any thoughts on these or other nearby places? Places to stay? Visit?

Thanks for helping ... this site makes planning for India much more fun.

I'd recommend that you stay in Puri (Z Hotel -- see the hotel section for info) and visit Bhubaneshwar and Konark, Pipli and perhaps Cuttak (if you're interested in ikat weaving, that's the place). I've never visited Chilka Lake, but I hear it's a swell spot in winter for bird watching.

Thumbs up Welcome

Hi la2paris,
Welcome to IndiaMike.
This is not easy to mention any specific interesting place for the photographers (especially in the Himalaya). Haridwar to Mussoorie journey is good but if you can spare a day try to visit Devprayag from Haridwar. You’ll be able to come back to haridwar by evening. Devprayag is an interesting place. Moreover, the journey will be a good destination for a photographer. I’ve a photograph which was snapped at Devprayag - http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s...00/ppuser/4434

Regarding the trip to Orissa, very good suggestion from Wonderwomanusa. And you can visit Dawalgiri, Nandan Kanan, Lingaraj Temple, Udaygiri, Khandagiri from Puri. Either you can hire a car or a package tour to visit these places.

Now, the most important thing – “Plz don’t forget to share your pix”.

Good luck,
Somnath

I agree with both Somnath & wonderwomanusa. I would add Gopalpur on sea to the Orissa part. For a photographer this place is special. The early mornings & dusks create haunting images of the deserted half sunk bungalows on the beach. The fishermen launching their boats, coming back with the catch, the children of the fishermen are all a photographer's delight. The view from the light house is breath taking.
Chilka lake is highly recommended. Stay at Barkul at Chilka.

Dehradun, Mussoorie, Dhanolti, Kempty Falls, Haridwar and Rishikesh are some of the places you can visit.
