Hi all,

I am an American national with an Associates Degree in Sociology, that is 60 completed hours more or less. I am interested in continuing my education in this field (Sociology, Anthropology or Social Work) at an Indian University. ANYONE with ANY experience or ideas are welcomed and valued, cheers!

The Indian university educational system is very structured. It is not clear what the status of your associate degree would be.

Delhi University has excellent programs in Sociology and Social work (I don't know as much about their Anthropology program). You might want to contact whoever deals with foreign students (there should be a designated official) at Delhi university to see where you could fit into their system. I am sure many other universities in India also have good programs in the subjects that you are interested in. If you plan to be in Delhi, JNU would be the other university to check out.

Good luck.

What we call Anthropology in the United States is what is meant by Sociology at Indian universities. Many of the great Indian Anthropologists (e.g. Srinivas and Beteille, among others) are known in India as Sociologists. Anthropology in India is what is known in the US as Physical Anthropology and is concerned primarily with Tribals (The Tribal "Question") . In general, all the Anthropology departments that I visited were also trapped in Cultural Materialist modes of research that were cutting edge in Western Anthropology circa 1965. Sociology Departments were more forward looking, but still way behind the times.

I met many Anthropology and Sociology students and more than one asked me what they could do with a degree in these subjects. Frankly, this suprised me at first - since you would think that they had put some thought into this prior to chosing these fields as their major. As it turned out, many (but certainly not ALL) of them ended up studying these fields because they could not get into the programs that they wanted (e.g. usually MBA or Computer Studies programs). Of course, I am also NOT talking about a premiere institutions such as JNU.

I just came across the Rajagiri College of Social Sciences ( http://www.rajagiri.edu ) which is located in Cochin, Kerala. Is anyone familiar with this institution? They offer a BSW (Bachelor's in Social Work), MSW, and a DSW as well as degrees in sociology and "allied social sciences."
