I'm not following this argument. How are you going to "save" if you have to ship individual packages from India to your purchasers in the UK? How is that the same as selling as you do now?

Many sellers on eBay US are from China, but they get special cheap rates somehow. Parcels from India are expensive, and also they tend to get stolen.

Ask a knowledgable tax accountant. My sense is, that, irrespective of where your customer is, or where the sales portal is (Ebay.uk) You are buying and shipping ex.India, you'll be paying tax in the country.

We had member, who, if I recall correctly, was the spouse of an employed wife. He ran quite an extensive business selling and shipping textile and gift items, and has mentioned it in his posts. You might like to read them, even though it it was 9-10 years ago.

Just now, I can't extract his name from a sticky patch of brain cells. nycank, you know who I mean?

(I have no comment on the legality, re visas, tax, etc of what he did.)

Alfie,

We are a fair ebay business in the UK, our ebay turnover is over 15K every month.

As goods are shipped from India, you will be liable for tax for those goods in India. I'm assuming you're in the UK, thus setting up an eBay business account in the UK, but sending goods from India. This will become even more complicated, as as a "business customer", you will be charging VAT(eBay UK account) on transaction on goods that are not in the UK, nor shipped from the UK(As a business customer, VAT is included, even though you may not be registered for VAT). On top your customers will pay VAT, or/and duty on goods when goods arrive with them as they are shipped from India.. All you will end up with is negative feedback on eBay, and complications.

Things are different if you are setting up a business in India, and transactions taking place in India.

Hi Londoner.

Thank you for all the info .Yes thought it wouldn`t be that simple .I am planning do a least 6 months in India for the next few years. So was looking at something to keep me busy.

Yes i already have a UK ebay business .So was thinking of just changing my location on ebay and running it from India. There is a company on ebay, an american couple store name (eyesofindia) doing it from Jaipur selling on ebay.uk.They seem to be doing quite well .

What happens in practice and what is legally correct are 2 often very distinct things. The legal road is fraught with administrative difficulties, you should first of all contact an accountant that has experience with e-commerce and decide where to establish your business (which involves more than changing a field on the Bay and also has visa ramifications). Some people just do whatever and get away with it for a while, no stress, no taxes, no hassles. But when the hammer finally falls, it can fall hard and cost a ton of money to set things straight.

I'm afraid it is not going to be that easy. eBay will not allow you to change location country of UK registered eBay business to India, you will have to set up a separate eBay account on eBay India, with Indian physical address and Indian PayPal account. When it comes to PayPal, it's even more complicated as Rupee is not fully tradable currency and if you even log into PayPal business account from India, you will be locked out and will have to go through PayPal security(I've gone through this experience)

Can I emphasise on "They are doing it from Jaipur", they sound like business set up in India, and selling on eBay UK...
