I was living and working in India earlier, having spent around 13 years there - in the North. That was in the 1980's and 90's. Now I don't have to earn money any more to make a living so I've been thinking of going to India again, at least for some months every year.

However, under no circumstances would I ever go to one of the metros. My favourite place for settling down would be Mysore/Mysuru. Not too big, not to small, wonderful surroundings (the Hoysala temples, the hills), and the climate there is perfect.

Is there anyone here living in Mysore?

The only other alternatives I can think of are either Pune or Aurangabad. However, I haven't been to Pune for years, so I'm afraid that nowadays it is as congested and polluted and unbearable as Delhi and Mumbai and Bangalore. Aurangabad is lovely but in summer it simply gets too hot.

By the way: I'm new to this forum. I'm 57, male, from Germany.

Welcome to IM!!

I am not staying in Mysore but yes I do happen to be from Bangalore (Mysore is a couple of hours drive). Mysore isn't what it used to be 10 yrs back but it definitely is still a place worth staying. Certain pockets are densely populated and traffic congestion is evident. But which place doesn't have this problem now!!

Pune is also a good place to stay. But I would prefer to stay at Mysore rather than Pune. Too much traffic and weather wise also not comparable to Mysore, I feel.

Well, I've seen that there are PLENTY of hotels nowadays in Mysore, everywhere. That probably means it's packed with tourists ... Well, beginning of next year I'll come to India for a couple of weeks and see myself.

We stayed in Gokulam Mysore 2011 for a month and a half, rented accommodation on monthly basis in a fairly quiet neighborhood (we were there for yoga) not in the center of town, you can get places that you can do your own cooking (we didn't) we found it easy going not much hassle and bustle and a short bus ride to center of town. There is quite a lot of westerners there (mainly for yoga). No Idea how it is now .
