So, I'm an illustration student who's hoping to go into the game design industry, specifically concept art. It's a difficult field to break into, and I've been browsing different job openings for it, of which I've found a few in hyderabad. One is offering "1,15,000" a year, though I'm a bit confused how to read that. 115k rupees right? why is there a second comma after two digits?

Anyways, I was wondering if that was a fair amount of money to live on yearly. I've been browsing around and I thought I saw that 20k rupees a month was enough to live pretty comfortably in the hyderabad area, so I'm wondering how far about 9k or so would get me. Would I still live comfortably? Hopefully I'd only be living there for a year or two tops until I can get hired to a more prestigious developer back in the states. If there's anything else I should know, feel free to tell me!

9k rupees per month is not a livable salary for a white collar job.

Hi Ben

In case you keep looking for work in India there are a number of things you need to know. First up, it is quite difficult to obtain an Employment Visa for India.

To summarise the employment visa requirements:

You will need to be a highly skilled and qualified professional
The job needs to be with an Indian company
You need to have a firm job offer in writing
You need to apply for the employment visa from your home country
There is also a salary threshold of US $25,000 per annum (ie, the job has to pay at least that)

Basically, you need to have skills, knowledge and experience that no Indian does.

Secondly, before applying for a job in a foreign country, you should visit the country to have some idea about what you're letting yourself in for.

Dear Ben - may I ask why did you opt for Hyderabad of all the Indian cities? If you are a student of (digital) illustration - and are good at what you do - I could try to help you - but we will need to take this conversation offline!

Neither you, nor Ben, have the minimum 10 post to use the PM facility.

Please note that the rules for Foreigners to be able to work in India are different and quite onerous as mentioned in the posts above. While you may be able to help him find a job, it has to pass through all the above hoops.

Ouch! Might have to wait a few days or perhaps longer to hit the 10 post mark! Thanks for pointing this nycank!

$25000 seems to be nearly 1500000 per here, that means per month the salary is nearly 1,25,000

Baba's suggestion is pretty good, actually! There are couple of good design schools in Hyderabad.
