chowderheads; they always call in the a'noon just when you're napping. And I swear, you have to be a bigger jackass to fall for it. First they started with free money, then cheque, then insurance, man, a bunch of muppets, these were.

This is not exactly funny but it does make up for lost sleep.

Random Guy: "Sir, you have won Rs 1 lakh, please come and collect it"
Me: So?
him:"err...ahh...please come and collect the original documents"
Me: what original documents?
RG: "Saar, you come to BTM Layout(some location in BLR) and collect the cheque, saar"
ME: OK, I will send my constable to collect it.
RG: Constable?..... Saar, your family has to come saar.
ME: Yes,my constable will come in a police jeep and collect the documents and then I will come
RG:err...ok..ok...sir
Me: What are you giving?
RG: A free insurance policy for Rs 1 Lakh, lifetime free, saar.
Me: which company?
Silence
Me: Do you have an IRDA license to sell insurance?
Silence
Me: are you there?
....
RG: wait saar, I will call you back

Ph rings again, female voice this time, starts off directly.

F: we are from india infoline and we are giving free insurance, saar.
Me: do you have an Irda license?
F: I'll have to check saar.
me: and you're giving me this free? And what's your commission?

Silence
F: wait saar, I will call you back

Ph rings again, another female, again starts off directly
F2: saar, we are not ordering you to buy insurance, you just come and collect the original documents.
Me: Do you have an IRDA license?
F2: Don't waste my time and ask me silly questions, you come and collect the originals
Me: What's your commission on this? (by law, agents are supposed to disclose this)
F2: why are you asking these questions? don't waste my time. Do you want this or not? If you don't want it, no problem. Dont talk like this
Me: So you wont tell me whether you have a license and what your commission is?
F2: saar, without license we can't sell insurance saar. And if you don't want it, you don't have to come
Me: Ok, fine, thx,bye

You might have enquired if they would send a car for you, or, at least, refund your travelling expenses!

I just give a firm "No Thank you" and cut the call.

I did get two or three spam SMS messages recently, telling me of the benefit that god would give me if I bought rudakshra beads from them. Whereas I am certain that nearly all such messages (an increasing menace) come from a centralised service, and replies would never even be seen, on this occasion, I acted on a hunch, and replied with a brief note of what god might do to spammers! I never received another such message

Here in Canuckland, if you have an Indian name, you get barraged about long distant services. Its particularly annoying to me and even more so my sons, as we indeed never make any calls to India. A group of friends and I were sitting around the other day at temple and this was our solution. It goes something like this:

Yes, I'm very interested, but I have a personal secretary. His name is ________ (one of the friends in the discussion) and this is his number. Please just call him instead.

So now in this case it becomes, "Yes, Sir. I am interested indeed, please contact my company's Indian secretary in Chennai. You can deal with him directly. His name is Nick and his number is ______.

I haven't had a call in over a year - since I signed up for the national do not call list.

Being on such a list may work in Canada - I doubt if it would work in India.

I get Indian SMS spam on my mobile, but I don't mind because it's in Hindi (or similar) and it's pretty.

None of my friends, colleagues or businesses I deal with use my home number, it's there only for broadband, so I know that any calls I get are either illegal* marketing calls or scams.

That means that I am in the delightful position of being able to feel free to be extremely blunt on a good day, or extremely rude if they've caught me at a bad time.

*Illegal because I subscribe to the UK telephone preference service, which marketers must abide by.

Peak: Yes, I signed up too, but that was just a few weeks back. The calls seem to be less now. Only time will tell. It was my last name that was the problem. I'm hoping it works. I also said 'please take me off your list' a lot. That helped.

It should noticeably decrease the calls and you can threaten to report any caller's that do violate this personal ban. Of course, it may not stop the freelancers/ home-based telemarketers who pickup a phone book & go through a target market &/or ethnic sounding name section.

I get calls once a month or so about changing my telephone provider and they are always from India (even though they sometimes deny it and say their name is John or something).

I always tell them I'm content with my current phone service thankyou, but would like to talk to them about India and sometimes they will chat away happily for 10 minutes or so. I like that

(the supervisors must be napping!)

I used to get them too .... only I found it more fun to turn the tables on their sales pitch & troll them a bit - especially because they're are sooo scripted.

Where are you calling from?

India, sir.

Where is that?

It is a country in Asia.

How many people live there?

Over a billion.

Have you had chai today?

Excuse me sir?

Oh India, I think you wear something called a sari?

<laughing> no sir, only the ladies are wearing these.

Apka hindusthani bol sakte hain?

......(too much fun & they're all pretty good sports about it too)

Nick: At least I never said I was good at typig, did I?

Julia: Yes, I've had several conversations about being a non-Tamil speaking Hindu with a Tamil name over the phone. One guy volunteered to even give me a tour of the great city of Coimbatore next time I'm in town, which is most likely never given my advancing age.

My experience: there is such a list in India, but it indeed does not work well, -- especially if your phone company itself is intent on spamming you! The only thing that works is using your mobile's screen list (but only upto the limit of possible screened numbers).
