Saying white man is outside of relevance here I believe. How many Indian men (not in the movies) do you see bending a woman 90 degrees to land a kiss on her nape?

"In Mumbai, members of the right-wing Hindu nationalist group Shiv Sena beat burning effigies of Gere with sticks and set fire to glamorous shots of Shetty.

Similar protests broke out in other cities, including Varanasi, Hinduism's holiest city, and in the northern town of Meerut, where crowds chanted "Down with Shilpa Shetty!""

and is this the same group that ran Deepa Mehta out of Varanasi when she tried to film Water there, and burned theaters when Water was shown?

Yeah, the Shiv Sena are the movie theater smashers, protesting "indecency." They were also the driving force behind the Bombay riots of 1992-993. They are mostly a collection of disaffected poor kids, ready for any sort of aggressive action, including killing people. Suketu Mehta writes about them in "Maximum City."

These protesters are a Bunch of losers. The same Bunch will protest against Valentines, Liz wedding and any thing that they think will remotely 'insult' Indian traditional values.

These people dont knw the history of India before the Mughal rule .Vatsayana will turn in his grave , as he never would have imagined that India has changed so much from his Kamasutraesque times to squirm over a kiss.

That wasn't a kiss - it was a bloody Vulcan Lip-lock.

all i can think when i look at that photo is how old Richard Gere is looking these days. it's like he's sucking the youthful essence out of Shilpa Shetty in order to retain that last little speck of his heartthrob charm.

Are you sure he isn't whispering in her ear and asking her how to get onto Celebrity Big Brother?

In this article Shilpa Shetty gives a great response - won't apologize, points out the poor priorities of the protestors, etc.

Good for her, I say.

It is comparable to last week's "lawsuit" against Elizabeth Hurley for "sitting on a sofa" during her marriage.

And here is a video of Shilpa berating the press for its behavior. She's just great, and clearly speaking spontaneously, too.
