I think about visiting an astrologer and get a birth-chart when I am in India. But I have second thoughts about it.
On one hand one my friend adviced me to do that, saying it will give me a better understanding of myself.
On other hand, he might say things that I don't want to know (Like I met a person, who told me that when she was 23 and visited astrologer at first time, he told her, she will not marry before 35, of course it made her upset.), and the informations might influent my decisions and free will.

Do you find J. astrology beneficial for yourself?
It seems that it plays important role in India.

astrology

Yes.... Jyotish astrology plays an important part in the life of many indians.

Suggest you to make your birth chart and visit an astrologer.Listen to all that he says. Take all that is favourable and forget all that is bad. Take precaution when you are told that something bad is gong to happen.

Why not give a try?

Yep that predictions on a grand scale. I've a small book like collection of predictions of my life writtern by the astros. It talks about fortunes, family, marriage, and even the death (though said in implicit ways). A lot of people do this. I dont know for what. It's fun reading.

Then there are specifc predictions. Say for the next 5 years and so on.

I'm not sure if 'Jyotish' is meant by that kind of astrology. If so it is very common.

There is this 'Nadi' astrology, which too is famous but very limited to some areas.

Just to add to the colour a little.

First we do not have 'Free Will', only limited free will, for every action this is an equal and opposite reaction, the law of karma, it all takes time but follows as spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Our choice begins with the first foot step for each day, left or right, each has a direction to take us. We can take an action, that may be our choice but we do not have the free choice of all the following circustances that unfold from our choices. Free Will implies that we can do absolutely anything, our choice, but officials say otherwise, the weather jumps in, our families, friends, work etc., the processes that unfold due to our choices take it away from the realms of free will and into that of Limited Free Will. We can choose to go this way or that way on a path but we do not know what each choice has in stall for us and at each further turn there is always a series of options that have twists and turns within them that we have no idea about or their consequences. Free Choice of Free Will means that we know everything and all of the outcomes of our choices, we know our Will and have the Freedom of Choice, but we do not, absolutely not.

Astrology is based on this limitation and shows the potential of our future based on the obsticles of life and the 'normal' choices we make and our reactions. While our potential at birth is one thing, what we have chosen along the way has either allowed the realisation of this potential or taken us away from it. So while the charts say this will be so, our limitations may not make it so. When an astrologer does get it wrong and they are questioned about their inaccuracy, such audacity, how dare one, well it is only a guide; the excuses come thick and fast.

Astrology is a guide, like a map but like a map cannot show every detail and it is in the detail that our life unfolds, these little things, deviations and choices we make take us on other journeys but also can bring us back to the map for times and the astology may be accurate at finding these crossings in our journey but there are always other hands being played in the card game of our life and we may not know who holds the greater card.

It is like finding a spiritual teacher, out of the blue one is pulled to one, pulled then to another and another, our choice is not in this as we are either pulled gently or as destiny comes into play attached by chains to a bulldozer and dragged to our true point in life. This card is played and the astrologer knows nothing of this hand.
