Travelling to Shimla in February ? good idea?

Hello All

My wife and I will be in Delhi in mid- February. We would like to spend 3 days on a side trip to Shimla.

I would value any imput on whether or not this is advisable at that time of year ( i.e. late Winter) and what is the best way of getting there & back and any advice on where to stay, what to see & do etc.

Would appreciate your advice.

Shimla would be cold and perhaps under a blanket of snow IN Feb and less crowded, you would get a lot of discount as well.

Honeymoon Planning - Traveling to Shimla in February

Hi Friends,
I am planning to go to shimla for honeymoon in Feb 2009(from 21st to 25th) and this would be my first tour to Shimla. I need help and suggestion to make my plan from all travel gurus. I have been browsing through this forum for quite a while and found lots of useful information. And I am sure I will get more information and answers to all my queries.

My Concerns:
1. Weather in Feb towards end? Is it totally snow covered?
2. Are there any sports activities possible in this month?
3. What is best mode of transport from Delhi to Shimla?
4. How is the journey from Delhi to Shimla by Volvo? Will it be better to hire Car and travel from Delhi to Shimla?
5. Security concerns?

Thanks & Best Regards,

Should be covered with Snow. Mostly is. But you can never predict weather! Should be freezing cold anyway and you can venture up towards Kufri, Fagu etc for snow.

2. Are there any sports activities possible in this month?

There is go-karting in Kufri. Skiing sometimes when the snow is abundant. Apart from that I dont see any sports etc. Trekking and Horse-riding too, but I wouldnt call them sport.

3. What is best mode of transport from Delhi to Shimla?

Take a Shatabdi from New Delhi to Kalka. I think it leaves arund 10 pm. Toy Train from Kalka to Simla. Toy train should not be missed. Alternatively, take Volvo from ISBT and get off at Kalka and then hop onto toy train.Lastly, You can slo take a Volvo from Delhi to Shimla. Least hassle and most comfortable but you'll miss the toy train.

4. How is the journey from Delhi to Shimla by Volvo? Will it be better to hire Car and travel from Delhi to Shimla?

Volvo is very comfortable and pretty inexpensive. Journey is about 9 hours and fairly comfortable. I think there are 4 buses leaving for Simla every day.

Time Table - http://himachal.nic.in/hrtc/acdetail...n/hrtctickets/

Hiring a car would be expensive vis-a-vis Volvo.

5. Security concerns?

Not really. I've found Simla to be the safest in terms of security and friendliness. mall road is crowded as ever. Pre-book your hotel and stay away from touts. Book your cabs through govt. authorised taxi stands and dont venture out too late.
Cheers
