Hi All,

This is an itinerary I've chalked up:

a) 06 April - DEL to CHD and then on to Peo (via dlx bus).
b) 07 April - Peo to Kalpa in a jeep or bus. Overnight in Kalpa.
c) 08 Apirl - Kalpa
d) 09 April - Kalpa to Chitkul (via peo or direct if possible) in a jeep or bus. Overnight in chitkul.
e) 10 April - Chitkul to Peo and then take dlx bus back to CHD. Take overnite train/bus to Delhi.

The queries I have:

0) Is this trip doable? Any bottlenecks? Is Chitkul to peo and then dlx bus to CHD doable on public transport on the last day? Do the timings line-up?

1) Would it be better to go to shimla directly from del and try to catch a shared jeep going to peo? Are any such available? Prices, timings and contacts, if any? I think, I can break the journey at Rampur - take two such jeeps/maxicabs SHML-RMPR and RMPR-PEO?
If not i'll stick to the dlx bus plan from chandigarh.

2) HRTC shows only 'ORDINARY' buses listed on the CHD-RECKONG PEO sector. Do the deluxe buses run only in some seasons or is it not allowed to be booked online?

3) Are there Jeeps (shared or otherwise) running from kalpa to chitkul? Prices, timings and contacts, if any? If not the buses seem okay for me. I guess this section will take a good 3-4 hours?

4) Also, I am assuming I can walk-in and get accommocation at kalpa and chitkul this time of the year?

Thanks so much for you help.

Wamr regards,

Seduledge
Best Regards,

Seduledge

Yes very much possible to travel this way. Read through my TR in signature (and skip to the Kalpa / Chitkul part). I went by bus too. There are two deluxe buses per day (2x2, non AC) from Chandigarh to Recong Peo. From Peo side they start at 7 in the morning and I *think* same time in the evening. There's HRTC's Chd bus stand number in my TR, call them to confirm. It'd be very long to ride same day Del-Peo though, so think over it.

Hi Vaibhav,

Read your TR... lots of info and great pics. Definitely is one of the best TRs on IM. Thanks for your inputs.

W.r.t. the itinerary - I was just going through the HRTC and saw a Himgaurav (TATA-AC) bus from Delhi ISBT to Rampur. This does look great to me.
After Rampur can I get shared jeep/maxicabs to Peo/Kalpa? If not atleast I can manage the last 100kms or so in the 'ordinary' buses that ply this route.

This are the DEL-RMPR bus details:

RouteID Source Destination Type DepartureTime Distance Fare Via
589 Delhi ISBT Kashmiri Gate Rampur HIMGAURAV (TATA-AC) 7:24PM 520 868.00 Shimla

This does look enticing. I'm thinking of going ahead with this booking. Any suggestions?

I hope this route isn't himgaurav up until shimla and then ordinary from Shimla to Rampur. That will be a big KLPD ;-)

Need to check with HRTC.

Hey seduledge

You will easily get private as well as HRTC buses from Rampur to Reckong Peo during the daytime. I don't think that you would get shared jeeps from Rampur. The timing of the Himgaurav bus is also fine as you would be during the daytime in Rampur.

.
I looked at the HRTC site, the bus I rode on the way back from Peo to Shimla doesnt appear. maybe theyve changed the type. Call them for best results or take the metro to himachal bhawan if you have some time on your hands.

Hey abhijitiitr & Vaibhav,

Many thanks for your inputs. You guys have been great!

I think I'll go the himgaurav (rampur) route and take it ahead from there.

Hi,

Check the thread:http://www.indiamike.com/india/himac...sport-t237175/

Call Peo HRTC for more details.

Few of the private buses might not be running till Chhitkul if road is blocked. Chhitkul to Peo on last day is possible.

Sorry am crashing your thread! I have about 5-6 days time off and will be in pathankot. I want to head to Kalpa. What's the quickest way to head there? Do I go via simla? Could the kind folks here please point me in the right direction?

Public transport only please! Solo traveler here!

Public buses do ply from Mandi, Dharamshala etc. to Reckong Peo. They come via Sundernagar, Karsog and Rampur. The resulting journey surely shall take lesser time than the journey involving Shimla.

While I agree with Abhijit, the most comfortable option for Venkat is the 2x2 deluxe from Chandigarh to peo. One used to be at 6 pm and another at 6 am. He should call hrtc stand at chd to confirm. Ptk to chd can be train or bus.

Aarosh, Vaibhav and abhijit thank you! I have time off from 9 afternoon upto 15 evening this April. The journey will most likely be from amritsar and back again to amritsar.

Do you guys reckon the best option for me is to go to chandigarh and then hop again? How long do you think this journey will take? The other option is to go to simla. Or head to mandi. Which will be the fastest?

Yes will try and make a couple of calls, but my Hindi is atrocious and sometimes the operators have almost no patience to answer right...

Hi heyvenkat

Its a long journey and its better to be on a Volvo or a deluxe, if possible. Take a train/volvo from Amritsar in the night and reach Chandigarh in the morning before 5.30am. Take the morning deluxe to Peo from there.

I agree with Vaibhav. Though the shortest route might be through Mandi, its best advised to be comfortable rather than reach quickly( and the difference might not be more than 2-3 hrs).

The 6 pm bus from ISBT 43, Chandigarh is a normal 3*3 bus which would take around 13 hours to reach Peo. Its best avoidable because of bad roads after Rampur which the bus reaches around 2am, thus taking away your precious sleep. There are two buses to Peo in the morning from Chandigarh and one of them is a deluxe one which starts at 6 am.

Don't worry about your Hindi. Its the last thing you need to be worried about.

Thanks everyone! Do you guys reckon with 5 days to spare I have enough time to head up to kinnaur, do the Shivling spire trek and get back to pathankot? Is this possible in the given time? Also, is this an okay time to head up there? I am trying to get on with a few trek reports to this place.
