Hello all. Having made a lot of use of Indiamike before my trip to India this month I thought I would share some brief thoughts. Excuse the shorthand style of these. If you have any questions do please ask.

Hotels: Stayed in Hotel White, Chail Palace, Kasauli Ros Common, all of which I would recommend. See tripadvisor reviews pasted at end. NB particularly the problems I had with the HPTDC website for booking the last two places - would recommend following up reservation with email to check dates as there appears to be a bug with the system.

Taxi from Chandigarh 1500 - seemed fixed charge. We got an Indica. No hassles with tolls etc. Dropped at lift at bottom of mall.

Hotel White quite a walk from there, maybe 15 mins. Big great view from balcony we were room 27 I think.

In the evening wandered to ridge and along mall to Embassy Retreat - great place to watch the sunset nice and cozy with intriguing decoration of quotes from famous authors. Ate at chinese place on middle bazaar. Not great but god for a change. Found India coffee house had an unlocked wifi network as well as tasty food and helpful waiters.

Next morning walked to viceregal lodge bit of a schlep to walk but nice views. Good guided tour part of entrance ticket. V calm place.

Bus to chail from behind tourist office 35 rs. Helpful passengers made space for us. Soon became v full. Took 2.5 hours. Was fine way to get there though would have liked to get out to look at kufri.

Chail palace amazing place. Fun to walk to cricket ground - about 40 minutes - great views.

Car to Kasauli 1350 - bit expensive but buses complicated with lots of changes and different bus stations. V steep road down as well which might not be fun in a bus.

Kasauli Ros Common much less special than chail but fine. Unfortunately problems with electricity which affected hot water and heating. V v cold with snowfall on the night we were there.

Good dhabas in the bazaar with daal, rotis etc. Nice walk up to sunrise point about 15 mins from hotel. Nice church in town with friendly pastor who gave us tea though he was on his sickbed and got the warden to open it up. Not a huge amount to do. Food ok. Grand Maurice a more characterful place to stay but more pricey.

Car to Dharampur 200 rs. Toy train down to Kalka good fun observing the amazing engineering.

Hotel White tripadvisor review:
We were pleased with our choice as we enjoyed the views. The rooms were fine and quiet. We were a bit surprised to have to pay quite a hefty extra fee for a heater (completely necessary in early Jan). The facilities were nothing special but perfectly adequate. The staff were rather grumpy but all in all we had a good stay.

Chail Palace tripadvisor review:
The only problem I had was booking through the HPTDC website. It has a bug and didn't record the date I wanted to stay correctly. I should have checked the docket they sent with an email, but luckily the staff at the hotel were extremely helpful and rang the booking company and got it sorted out. Luckily they had space when we just turned up on the door!
It's a lovely location, and great building, if rather lacking in other guests when we were there.

Do avoid Durga Dhaba at Kasauli. The food there is very poor. If you walk along the mall road then there are other places to eat.

Best place to eat in Kasauli is Ros Common. They make the best stuffed chappatis around. Far better than the rubbish served at Gianis in Dharampur.
