Hello IMers,

I am planning a 3 day trip to Chail at end of May, with family. Need some help planning the itinerary and logistics. Here's what i could list so far:

Pre trip plan:
-----------
1. Take the overnight Volvo to Shimla. (Get down in the morning on the way kandaghat ???) and take a bus/jeep/car to chail.
2. Book from HRTC website ?
3. Book Chail Residency or sunshine inn.

Trip plan
--------
Day1: Reach the hotel. Rest for some time and then look around
a) Kali ka tibba
b) maharaja palace
c) ????

Day 2: Go to Chail wildlife sanctuary, do short trek / picnic.

Day 3: Go to shimla spend the day there (Will need a place to keep the luggage).
a) Jakhu temple
b) Shimla Heritage Walk
c) ??

Leave for Delhi in the evening.
-------------

Can you guys pls check it and let me know if the itinerary seems good, or any changes required. Also I need to fill in the blanks/ question marks

Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

book the volvo from HRTC/ HPTDC site and disembark at kandaghat. you may reach there little early so you can either book a cab or may await for the first bus to Chail.

Cant comment on hotels but both seem to be outside city.

you can also spend some time at Chail Cricket Ground (sub to entry). Also Sidh baba ka mandir is there.

you can keep the luggage in Cloak room at Old bus stand as its near downtown.
I think heritage walk will take quite some time so it should be enough. you can start from Jakhu temple only.

Some of the overnight Volvos of HRTC can be booked upto Vaknaghat (before Shimla), which saves you a little bit of cash if you want to get off at Kandaghat. Can be booked online.

HPTDC has only one Volvo to Shimla and costs a bit more than HRTC.

Hi, Thanks lowkey and dilliwala for the quick reply.
A few more queries:
1) When I reach kandaghat early morning (how early are we talking ??) will there be cabs standing there or we have to book them online.. ?
2) Is Day 2 plan ok ?? or would it be better to move to shimla and spend 2 days there ?

it will take 7-8 hrs from delhi to reach kandaghat. so you can calculate the arrival time when your bus starts from delhi. the taxi union is near bus stop only so you can book the taxi on arrival.
TBH i dont have much knowledge about Chile wildlife sanctuary. there is a small zoo in kufri though but that can be covered while traveling from chail to shimla on way.

Thanks to all the help. Trip was wonderful. Heres a quick summary.

Boarded the HRTC volvo from Himachal Bhawan at 8:35pm. Stopover at sukhdev (murthal) Amazing white butter and normal tandoori parantha.
Reached Kandaghat at 5.30 am. Took a cab for chail (800/-) reached Chail residency at 7:15 am. Hotel has clean rooms and nice views. (1900/per room per day). Not many restaurant options.
Day-1
Walked around chail to Chail palace (nice place with a garden), Siddh baba temple and sports ground (can be missed, nothing special here) Had lunch at Kunwar restaurant (only place which looked clean) Small place can customize food according to your taste.

Day-2
Took a cab (350/-) to Kali ka tibba (wonderful views, the best in chail) The roads are in bad condition though.
Took a cab (1600/-) to Shimla via kufri (the place has become horse-shit, literally).
Shimla stayed at Hotel Surya (3600/per room per day) clean rooms but no view, govt school next door so very noisy mornings/afternoons. Not a place to relax.
Walked around Mall road and lower bazaar. Had lunch at Himachali Rasoi (beautiful concept, 5 local curries with rice thali and local delicacy called Siddu which i had earlier at a nondescript place in Manali, but this one was better) Total damage 600/- for two thali and one siddu.

Day-3
Went to Kali bari temple, Lakkar Bazaar, middle bazaar. It started raining soon and we packed up and took 10:15 volvo from New bus stand (cab took 250/- from hotel to bus stand)

Chail and shimla provided a direct contrast in nature vs commercialization. Both have positives and negatives, I personally liked Chail more than Shimla. If only the wildlife Sanctuary in chail had some trails and guide/safari etc. It would have been amazing.
