Hi Fellow IMers,

Are there buses plying between Shimla and Kalpa. I checked on the govt. site - http://hrtc.gov.in/hrtc/default.aspx.

There is no direct govt. bus to Kalpa. Are there private buses, jeeps plying between these two places?

Do we have the availability for buses/jeeps from:

1) Kalpa to Nako.
2) From Nako to Tabo
3) Tabo to Dhankhar
4) Dhankhar to Kaza

Our earlier plan with 4 guys was to hire a jeep. Now it so appears that two of them may have stay back. With a backpackers budget, hiring a jeep for two people will shoot up our travel costs.

Eagerly waiting for your inputs.

Fingers Crossed ><>

@Jini

As promised I called up both Rekong Peo and Shimla bus stands to confirm timings for buses. There is one bus each morning from Rekong Peo to Kaza @ 6AM. The same goes via Tabo (10 to 11hrs), Sichling (another hour), and Kaza.

One more help needed.

Would you by any chance have the number for Kaza Bus Stand?

Thanks in advance.

Great !! As always you are so very helpful. I shall check with the them again tomorrow.

Do you think the chandrataal will be accesible around June 23rd 24th? We guys were thinking of hopping on a bus from Kaza, deboard @ Kunzum and trek/hike to Chandrataal. However we dont know if there will be tents available at Chandrataal. Would you have any details around it?

Thx

yes it will be accessible

i hardly think bus service will start by then between Kaza and manali, you can get bus upto Losar, from here kunzum is 19km away , you will have to either hire a taxi from losar or Kaza depending whether road beyond kunzum is open or not , from kunzum chandratal is nearly 8km easy walk , you can ask about tent at losar , since if tents are avalible at chandratal they will be only of youth of Losar , if not then "i have found even starry night makes a good roof"

Waw. Thanks Jini. I was not aware that Chandrataal is just 8 km from Kunzum. I am planing a circuit trip for Chandigarh, Kinnaur, Spiti, Lahaul, Manali & back. Have to cross Kunzum for this & hopefully it would be open in 3rd week of June. Would love to see ChandraTaal as well. This where the mighty Chinab originates rt?

One query. can we get a pony or something from Kunzum till the lake? I am ready to walk 8km (+8 km in return), but my wife may not.

You dont have to cross Kunzum if you just want to go to Chandratal (from kaza side), road will be blocked by snow between Batal and Gramphoo. Batal is after Kunzum and kunzum is pretty easy pass not like Rohtang which is at top of mountain.
Chandra river which originates from Chnadratal(though water comes from very far before chandratal from surajtal) is part of chinab, Chinab is actually chandra and bhaga river , which meet at Tandi in Lahul, just few km before keylong. In himachal it is just chandrabhaga, people in punjab and pakistan call it Chinab.

That is highly improbable, it is a easy walk all the way you go down only so it should be easy even for your wife. It is just a trail not easy on ponnies. But while coming back from chandra you can get ponnies, there will be Gaddi people with their livestocks camping nearby chandratal, it is not a dedicated service so you will have to convince them to take you to Batal(usually bargain for it). While coming back from chandratal you might wanna take other road which ponnie can walk on, that road connects to main road after 14 km just before batal and after kunzum pass.(it is not easy to walk that long at this altitude) or you can walk back through way you come and reach kunzum pass.

Great information again Jini. You are a rock-star!!!

What I have gained from your posts is that:

1) One who is coming from Manali side via Batal, may find roads ice-blocked between Batal and Ghrampu.
2) Chandrataal has two accessible routes:
a) From Kaza side: Chandrataal is only 8kms from Kunzum Pass. One can easily walk from Kunzum Pass.
b) From Batal: A 14km route to reach Chandrataal, which connects to the main road to Chandrataal. However, this route is difficult but one can take advantage of ponies at Chandrataal.

My next questions for you are:

1) If we start early (7am) from Kaza, can we reach Chandrataal via 8kms route starting at Kunzum Pass and return via 14kms route to Batal before the sunset?

2) In one of the blogs, I read that temprature goes steeply down (reaching freezing point) at night at Chandrataal. Is that correct? If we dont have any tents with us or dont find any on the night of June 23rd and 24th, can we survive there? You said "I have found even starry night makes a good roof" and we really wanna to do that given the climate isnt too harsh on us.

3) Are there houses at Batal where we can spend the night if we return from Chandrataal the same day?

4) Would public transport be available on Batal > Grampu > Manali route?

5) We would like to go to Rohtang Pass and then Manali from Chandrataal, and if we have to return from Kaza to Shimla it will be such a shame. What is the probability of finding any kind of transport from Batal to Manali?

Sitting here in New Delhi, it is difficult to gain access to information to remote places unless we have people like you who are readily sharing it with us. Wish I could add a star to your profile. When I return I will be sharing all the details via blog with the hope that it will help a few more fellow travellers.

Regards,

Hey ..
@infinitecolors ... the thing is that manali kaza route is not yet opened for vehicles and it might take 1 more week to open ..BTW when are you planning your trip ????
regarding ur questions :
1. yes it is very much possible for you to reach batal before sunset, and you will get hard top tents at batal and ofcourse meals.

2. well without tents its not possible to spend a night at chandratal , but you will get tents and meals there when the road is opened.

3. yup .. there are hard top tents at batal where you can spend a night.]

4.public transport is available on this route but only one bus that comes from kaza to manali.

5. well if you are planning your trip back from kaza to manali then i would recommend you to do this trip after 7th june ...possibly the road would be open by then.
