Hi folks, after the very successful Jalori Pass ride, Mcleodganj and Triund are next on the list. Planning a 4-day ride to the abode of the Dalai Lama in the last week of January, 2010. I request you guys to provide info on the following.

1. The shortest and best route from Delhi to Mcleodganj.
2. Suitable places for Camping at Mcleodganj (we'll carry tents this time)
3. Weather conditions in january - exactly how cold can it get?
4. Can we ride our bullets with pillions on this route?

1. The route is Delhi - Chandigarh - Una - Kangra - Dharamshala - Mcleodganj.

2. I think it'll be too cold for camping. Might get snow also.

3. Yes ! You can ride your mobikes with pillions here.
I did not fully understand the dread term "Terminal Illness" until I saw Terminal 1 D of Delhi Airport.

Thanks for the info Dehliwala . You put me in two minds regarding camping.

Anyway, I've a further query on the route. Can't we by-pass Chandigarh on the way to Una? I've a rough idea about a road that goes towards Ludhiana from Ambala and then takes a right for Kharar. This, as per my info, is a shorter route. Got any idea on this?

Hi Guys, how come nobody responding? I need as much info as I can gather in this short time. Never been to the Mcleodganj side of the Himalayas. I have a fresh set of queries -

1. How crowded will mcleodganj be in Jan? Do we need to book accommodation in advance?

2. Is the trek to Triund possible in Jan? If yes, can we get tents and sleeping bags etc on rent in Mcleod?

3. Shall we need a guide for the Triund trek?

Guys, plz respond with all yr knowledge.

McLeod Ganj will be really quiet in January so no need to book in advance.
Triund will be snowed in but you should be able to hike part of the way. Do let someone know when you go and when you expect to return as the route can be quite deserted at this time of year and it can be very cold.
You don't need a guide if you just trek to the snow line however if you decide to hike in the snow then I do suggest that you bring one just to be on the safe side. People sometimes get in trouble up there in winter and the weather can change very rapidly. There are lots of places where you can book guides in McLeod Ganj.

Have you read the Mcleodganj article by solotrekker in the articles section. It is about the adventures on the Triund trek and beyond. Must read.

I took the Kharar route last April. Very narrow road. My jeep passed through easily and I guess the bullets will have a lot of space to spare. The road was fine in most stretches and passes through fields and villages. This road diverges from the Ambala-Chandigarh highway, under the overbridge just before the toll plaza after Ambala. It diverges when you are within sight of the toll plaza. So that is your landmark to go off the highway.

Can not give a definitive reply on the availability and the quality of sleeping bags and tents, though one should reasonably expect these to be available. Make a call to a local tour operator. You can get a contact from any McLeodganj hotel.
Alone I walked. Strangers joined in. We became a caravan.

the best and shortest route is

Delhi -- Karnal--Ambala--Kharar--Ropar--Anandpur Sahib--Una--Kangra--Mcleodganj.

Take left from Ambala towards Ludhiana instead of going straight to Chandigarh.

Keep going straight till the Toll, dont cross the toll, there is a right turn going towards Kharar from toll, look closely so you wont miss it.

Keep going straight to Kharar and then left to Ropar.

Tents and sleeping bags are available for hire at Triund (Ask Tea Shops there). But I would not advise staying in a tent in this weather...

There is a Forest rest house and recently one private guest house has also come up there.

No you dont need to book in advance, not much rush in january season.but in case you need to then i'll give you guest house phone no. where i'd stayed in last aug'09.it was good.but i'll say you should go there and check/bargain yourself.there are really cheap and good hotels at mcleod gunj and also in bhagsu place, which is nearby place.
2. Is the trek to Triund possible in Jan? If yes, can we get tents and sleeping bags etc on rent in Mcleod?
i'd called an adventure agency day before yesterday, they said people are goin' on trekking and there are no such problems unless if it gets snowfall upthere...so its your luck.snowfall can happen anytime. There are 2 guest houses at triund.one is of government(which is costly) and other is private which is fairly cheap.they offer tent upthere but i wont advise you to stay in tent.ALso,there are shacks at triund(i think 2 in nos.)in case you need to buy some snacks.
3. Shall we need a guide for the Triund trek?
If you are goin' for the first time then yes, please do take one guide with you.i remember when i was trekking.i had my guide with me.it was raining heavily and there were 3 guys trekking ahead.they went to different/wrong way but luckily we were behind and my guide stopped them.its not easy to figure out which path is right.but in case, there is rush of trekkers then its allright.

Thanks for info cardinal. No, we don't plan to be too adventurous with the trek. We'll return if it looks dangerous.

Thanks Labrol. Yeah, i read the article by SoloTrekker. That guy is crazy, but i am not. Our passion is for biking and would like to keep the trek simple and easy. By the way, do you think it's worth taking the Kharar route from Ambala? Is it shorter than the route via Chandigarh?

Thanks Delhiwala. Do you think the guest houses at Triund will be open in January, especially if it snows?
