I would prefer to stay at both the places. Both have their own beauty.

I have not stayed in Narkanda... only passed through it...
1. Narkanda is mainly beautiful pine forests. very beautiful scenery but I dont think you get too see good view of snow peaks. It looks more like a place for resting and relaxing for few days with the convenience of being a day trip away from Shimla.

2. Sarahan has very beautiful view of snow peak range. accomodation at the bhimkali temple rest house is wonderfully clean and cheap. If you are coming in public transport then (I think)you have to take a bus from Shimla, get down at Jeori and take another vehicle from Jeori to sarahan.

Dear Bikashjb,
What I wrote was for me as For me traveling , seeing new places is not just to chose a destination, reach there and come back. To me it is about enjoying the travel part also, seeing the intersting places on the way, knowing people.
As on this route you will find quite a significant difference in these two places. You can see apple orchards, very high deodar trees, a few lakes everything lush green around Narkanda where as on the other hand near Sarahan, It is more of a grass land changing into a desert. You are slowly approaching desert This place also has its own beauty a beautiful old temple the Raja's palace.
I enjoy seeing all this and th's why I said I would stay at both the places.
Hope this brings some sense to the earlier post.

infact u can stay at both the places if you have time. while going at sarahan and while coming back at narkanda. But if you dont have time and you have to opt for 1 place only then i would recommend sarahan.

Narkanda is 2700 m. Fantastic views on a clear day. Pick any high spot, specially the ski slope (500-600 m walk). If there are no views from Narkanda, there'll be no views from Sarahan either.

Agree with nayan though about accom aspect, perhaps Bhimakali is better than similar cheap accom at Narkanda.
