Lahul and Spiti - Schedule please

I will be travelling to Lahul and Spiti with my wife in August. Will start the 14-day trip from Manali

My schedule, as of now, is something like this:

Day 1 Manali - Kaza
Day 2 Kaza
Day 3 Kaza - Kibber
Day 4 Kibber (day trip to Kye)
Day 5 Kibber (day trip to Gete)
Day 6 Kibber to Tabo (via Dhankar)
Day 7 Tabo
Day 8 Tabo to Nako
Day 9 Nako
Day 10 Nako to Kaza
Day 11 Kaza
Day 12 Kaza to Manali
---------------

What I need your help with:

I dont really wanna do the Kinnaur region this time as it will end up in a rush, and i want to take it kinda easy. Will do Kinnaur separately next year With this in mind, does the schedule make sense?

Do you think I should drop/add something from/to the schedule?

How do you think I can fit in Chandratal in this timeframe?

Any idea what the cab fair from Manali to Kaza is?

What do you think is the better way to return towards Delhi -- should I turn back to Kaza and to Manali or carry on to Shimla and then to Delhi?

Is a budget of around Rs 50,000 enough for this if we do long distances by cab and short ones by bus?

Any other suggestions are solicited.

Hi! It's quite a tight schedule to speak frankly. But for example if from Kibber you walk to Ki using the shortcut you pass Gete where there is basically nothing to see or do,so you can save that day.Coming back from Nako if you use a taxi you can perhaps visit the Pin Valley, say Kungri and the gompa there, where you can stay, instead of going to Kaza, and go to Kaza, which is about 2 hours away, the day after. If you leave for Manali by cab very early in the morning you can squeeze in a quick visit to Chandratal,a detour of less than 30 kms, and easily reach Manali by late afternoon-evening. The cab from Manali to Kaza is around 5000,perhaps a bit less. If you don't mind backtracking and if you ask me the Kaza-Manali-Delhi road is better, plus you can check out Chandratal. Your budget should be more than enough, unless you stay only in luxury places.

Thanks a ton Voyager... Ive added Kungri to my schedule...

Do you think it would be worth it if I drop Nako and stretch out the schedule... I am really apprehensive of getting very cramped for time there... Ive done a detailed trip of Srinagar - Leh - Manali... so do u think id be missing a lot if i missed Nako this year,

Also, Ive heard a lot about Lahlung gompa... where is that exactly... how do i fit that in...?

Thanks

Is Kaza - Langza - Komic - Demul - Lahlung doable by road.

If not, which of these villages can be accesed by a jeep?

Hi

Kaza to Langza is accesible and till Komic .. From Demul to Lalung Monastery its a gorge crossing and a great walk ... 14 days in Spiti and not doing Pin Valley ...

Thanks a lot dhananjay...
How do you think I can fit Pin Valley in the itenerary... I'd love to be there but as I haven't stepped into Spiti all my life, I dont know how realistic / worthwhile the schedule is... I'd appreciate if you can help me with this... Dhankar and Lahlung are definitely on.. will be doing homestays there

Heyo monkgonemad... I am loathe to skip Nako too.. but I thought Id club it with my 2008 summer trip to Kinnaur... is there anyway I can fit that in... I am mainly on a monastery trip... I have done the great lakes of Ladakh and nothing can beat Kiangdom by Tso-Moriri... plus there will be the Dhankar lake during this trip and maybe a few hours at Chandratal... with that in mind, does Nako still make sense...? Please suggest...

decisions, decisons. they drive me insane

Thanks again guys...

Hi

Hi,

I maintain that 14 days are substantial enough to visit Spiti till the time you dont want to breathe the essence in .. That takes a bit more than just traveling around ... I would suggest

Manali - Chattru - Batal - Chandratal (Camp)

Chandratal - Batal - Kunzum Pass - Losar - Rangrik - Kaza

Kaza - Kye Monastery - Kibber - Gete - Kibber

Kibber - Komic - Kibber - Langza

Langza - Demul - Lallung

Lallung - Dhankar

Dhankar - Sichling - Attargu - Kungri Monastery (Pin valley)

Kungri - Attargu - Tabo

Tabo - Chango - Nako

Nako - Sumdo - Giu - Mane

Mane - Tabo - Kaza ...

Now it depends upon you how you fix up your days doin all this

You see that you can also fix in Kinnaur (not elaborately though) visiting the highlights and exiting outta Shimla ...

Any more help .. post ...

Cheers

Hi! If the weather is behaving normally I would say the second half of July is better than the second half of August, because there is more greenery around and the days are longer, and you feel like if there is more energy around. But last summer between the second half of July and the first of August it rained quite a lot up there so one cannot really say.

Nah... thats too rushed for me... I dont think I wanna go beyond Tabo during this trip... I need to catch the morning and evening light for my photographs for a small project I wanna do on monastries in Spiti...

Pin valley is definitely on... will be in Mikkim for two nights

For me the high points of this trip is gonna be Ki, Kibber Dhankar, Lahlung, Mikkim and Tabo...

Hi! Why Mikim? It's possibly the least interesting place in the Pin valley, and the gompa is in Kungri,5 or 6 kms away.

Hi! If we can talk of normal circumstances it is likely to rain a bit more at the end of August, but in any case it should never be something dramatic. It was so last year from mid July to mid August as I said and there were some inconvenient, including being cut out of the world completely,no roads' connections,no power,no phone,no internet. In the second half of July you have the festival of Ki gompa, around mid August you have the Ladarcha fair in Kaza. And the period just before and after the 15th of August is the busiest in terms of visitors.

Hi! About Muse, I don't know how to contact them, but since the organization is under the umbrella of Ecosphere, you should perhaps contact them first at : www.spitiecosphere.com . They do organize the trek Langza-Lalung with home staying, but the other 2 trekking agencies in town do it too,and they were established before,so a bit more experience in the business, with this I don't want to influence anybody's choice.
